About

It all started when I got accidentally head-butted in the face...

It was at a music festival, I was dancing enthusiastically (eyes closed), and so was someone next to me … It resulted in a black eye so dramatic, that for weeks strangers approached and questioned me in the street, (often having made negative assumptions about how it'd happened). I’d recently bought a badge machine, so I made the “I am bored of talking about it” pin. It came in useful for me more often than I had expected. So I also made another for a friend who was frequently made uncomfortable by strangers commenting on her disability.

There were things that I struggled with, like time-keeping, my attention span and memory for things I found boring, social anxiety and insomnia. I made light of some of them with messages like “Sorry I am late”, and “You are making me nervous”.

I opened my Etsy shop, and began to make more badges for people with disabilities. I spoke to people with different sets of needs to find out what they would like others to know at a glance and then made badges to try and say the things that people couldn't, or didn't want to.

I talked to people with Autism, and mental health issues. I found that lots of people struggled to communicate their needs, and that it was often at the most crucial times when speaking was most difficult or overwhelming. I made badges like “Bad feelings”, “I need some time alone”, and “hug me?”.

Whilst researching neurodiversity I found the symptom list for ADHD, something I hadn't thought about much previously. I was diagnosed soon after. Suddenly everything fell into place, my whole life made sense. I realised that although I hadn't known about my ADHD, the first badges I made for myself were to help me counter or explain some of the quirks and issues around it.

Since then I have continued broadening Sootmegs’ selection of functional badges to include a wider range of underrepresented groups. I hope to spread awareness, to make people's worst days easier, and to make the invisible visible.

Frequently asked questions
IS MY DELIVERY TRACKED?

To keep my postage costs down I post all U.K orders as standard first class, and all international orders via regular airmail, unless we arrange for an upgrade. If you'd like an upgrade to a tracked service please just send me a message and I can arrange that for you at the relevant cost.

If you do not choose to upgrade to a tracked service, please remember that I can't offer any information on the whereabouts of your package once it has been posted.

WHEN WILL MY ITEMS ARRIVE?

From the day after I’ve posted your order, regular airmail usually takes three more business days to reach Western Europe, five business days to Eastern Europe and seven business days to the rest of the world. I have found from experience that deliveries to NYC can take up to one week longer than the seven day delivery period to the USA.

If you need your order before this time, please message me and I can arrange to upgrade your order to a slightly faster service for the relevant cost.
