Updates

Sorringowl & Sons will be at The Odd Market, at the Autry Museum, in Griffith Park, Los Angeles, this Friday from 6 -11pm. We will be introducing some new items for the ladies. Stop by, say hi, and enjoy some great food and craft beer at the market.
The Standard Pipe Pouch, Trailblazer edition, is in the shop now, in Earth Brown or Granite Black. Inspired by rocks I see on my daily hikes, I hand dye the leather to mimic the patterns and grain. Shown with a lighter pouch and old Caminetto nose warmer.
A custom Sorringowl & Sons Gent Pipe Pouch in a Cognac American Bison leather. This oil-tanned leather is soft to the touch and has a great pull. Will carry a pipe, tobacco, lighter, tamper, all in separate pockets, and pipe cleaners. Handmade in the USA.

About

Creating handmade, heirloom-quality, leather goods, one at a time.

In early 2010, after taking up the hobby of pipe smoking (and pipe collecting), I was looking for a nice pouch to go with my only pipe then (a no-name estate pipe).

All I could find, though, were cheap, black vinyl, mass-produced pouches that looked like they went out of style about 30 years ago. Even though I only paid about $7 for my first pipe, to me, it was worth a lot more, and it looked like it, so, even though I ended up buying one of those cheap pouches (which I did just for protection), I was unsatisfied, to say the least, and put my mind to finding something better, even if I had to make it myself.

One day, while sitting in my woodshop (I'm a self-taught woodworker and made custom furniture for many years before I turned to leather work), smoking my pipe, I pondered this problem for a bit when inspiration hit.

Lying in front of my eyes, on my workbench, was an old leather, chisel roll I bought a long time ago at a flea market. It had been worn to a very nice patina (by me--and others, no doubt) and was about as simple and perfect as a tool roll could be. I thought to myself, "why can't someone make a pipe pouch like that?" And so, I did.

Many different versions and improvements later, I came up with my first pipe pouch, The Standard. And now, I've branched out into other pouches (The Signature--a deluxe version of the Standard; The Clemens a combination pipe & cigar pouch, named after Mark Twain [who, himself, was both a pipe and cigar smoker]), The Gent, made to hold the basics, and The Hemingway, a stand alone cigar case. And, very soon, I will be offering other accessories like wallets, belts and bags.

Here is a brief description of some of my processes:
Dyeing Process:
Most of my items are made of undyed, vegetable tanned leather (which I hand pick from a local supplier), which is then hand dyed, by me. I hand mix all of my colors from my own dye recipes. The process can be very long and painstaking, but, the result is a color and texture that is unique to each individual leather item I make and which will only get better with time and use. I started hand dyeing my own leathers this way after being unsatisfied with the choice of many pre-dyed leathers out there, and discovering the great dying qualities of vegetable tanned leather and how well it holds up to, and benefits from, heavy wear. I have since added other, high quality, finished leathers to my lineup, including American Bison leather, and high quality cowhides from U.S. suppliers.

Sewing:
I use vintage Singer sewing machines to make the bulk of my pouches. These machines were built in the 1930's and 1940's, in the U.S.A., and, in addition to making over 1,000 items with these, were probably used in the past, by others, to make countless items. They are still going strong and are used for the bulk of the items I make. I also use heavy duty, industrial, walking foot machines for items with thicker leather.
