Native American beadwork that captures the vibrance of bass-filled urban dwellings and the humble warmth of Indian country's open stretches. South Wind Design is where Native traditions and city life meet.
The variety of items available in my shop will vary, depending my inspiration. At times, you'll see my shop dominated by earthy, feminine and delicately crafted contemporary jewelry with just enough edge for a stong-spirited woman to intricately stiched Native American applique beadwork. Check back often, as you never know when the tides will shift!

5 out of 5 starsWonderful stuff! Not my first pair by Becky but absolutely her items are my signature look, the statement pieces I wear to meetings with CEOs. Quality construction, good materials, fun with a side of serious, ecstatic to have them.

About southwinddesign
-
Blank pieces of metal serve as miniature canvases to etch with various patterns...
-
Then the long messy process of dying the metals begins...
-
I might change the colors a few times until they are just right, and then I sand them down
-
Dyed, sanded to expose the metal, next step is drilling and pairing with beads...
-
The final result of trials and errors (and a ruined manicure) but I just cannot stop, I love creating with metals!
The roots of SWD...
It's hard to define a clear starting date of South Wind Design because crafting has always been a big part of my life. At a young age, my mom and grandma instilled in me a love for crafting, second hand store scavenger hunts, and a true DIY spirit.
Because of these beautiful women, I've delved into all sorts of creative avenues which enabled me to supplement my income while working towards my bachelor's degree and teaching credential. I had an amazing experience teaching history for four years, but I was laid-off during the budget cuts. Four months later, I was diagnosed with cancer. It was a sad situation but the stubborn optimist in me would not be defeated! In response, I expanded SWD, I established my second etsy shop, Artesenias.etsy.com, and I enrolled in graduate school. All of it was enabled by my etsy customers and a wonderful circle of support!
Although I started as a traditional beadworker, over time, I began experimenting with contemporary jewelry styles. Nearly all of the creations you see in my shop I learned to through trial and error experiments. My experience with traditional beadwork influences my contemporary jewelry because it taught me to focus on details, textures, and overall "flow" in the design. While contemporary jewelry dominates my shop, traditional beadwork will always have a significant place in my heart.
Giving back to my community is important, so I donate time to my school district's Title VII program for Native students and families. Through our program, I'm able to teach students the basics of beadwork, provide mentorship, and promote education.
Things don't get much better than that if you ask me!
Things you should know about your SWD purchase:
1. You are supporting an independent, woman-owned business.
2. All sterling silver pieces are made with fair trade and/or recycled sterling silver.
3. Your order enables me to donate more time and resources to youth programs in my city.
4. You are supporting an artist that seeks fair trade elements to utilize in her designs. Additionally, she is transitioning to making all of her own ear wires and components to lessen the chance of supporting oppressive labor conditions in another country.
Where is South Wind Design heading?
Because South Wind Design is my "one-woman show," the horizon of SWD is exciting. Since 2007, etsy has helped me complete school through my graduate degree, supplemented my teacher income over summer breaks, and who knows what's next!
(*Excuse me momentarily while I send my intentions out into the universe*) With a little luck, etsy will also help fund my doctorate when I start by Fall 2022. Only time will tell where this road will take us, but that doesn't mean we slow down, stop, or turn around, it means we prepare for the possibilities that each turn will bring.

Shipping
In an effort to reduce waste and help the environment, when ever possible, I reuse clean shipping materials such as bubble wrap, bubble envelopes, etc.
Purchases will be packaged and shipped within the time frame stated on the "shipping and policies" tab in the listing(s) you order. Most pieces, as described in the listings, take 2-3 business days to ship. All Native beadwork, as described in the listings, can take up to 3-5 business days to ship.
It is the customer's responsibility to ensure their shipping address is correct when placing the order. After the package is placed in the mail it is out of our hands. If the shipping address on the order is incorrect, USPS will typically send it directly back to us, however this process can take a long time to transpire. No refunds or replacements will be made until the merchandise is back in our hands. At that point the customer will have to pay for the merchandise to be shipped a second time.
Problems with lost mail are rare, but they do happen! I highly recommend you purchase shipping insurance. If you would like to pay for insurance, let me know in the notes to seller and I will send you an invoice. Once your package has been submitted to the United States Postal Service, the actual delivery time is out of my control. Refunds and/or replacements will not be made unless the buyer has purchased insurance.
