For the love of colour

I've always been creative. My first love was writing and I had high hopes of growing up to be a writer - that might still happen (the writing part, I mean... I think I've well and truly missed the boat when it comes to growing up!), but to be honest, I've been too busy dyeing and generally just too busy with life to do much writing. If you had told me that one day I'd have a hobby to do with knitting and yarn, and that I would eventually turn that hobby into a little business, I might have called you crazy, or something similarly unflattering. But here we are. Like many dyers, I first started experimenting with yarn dyeing after getting into knitting as a hobby, and wanting to work with certain colours and colour combinations.

From my first attempts with a couple of balls of wool, a few bottles of food dye and some vinegar in early 2009, I was hooked on both the idea and the whole process of dyeing yarn. I soon moved onto proper acid dyes, and the vinegar has been replaced by citric acid - no more getting high on those vinegar fumes! ;-) I've been having fun experimenting with different dyeing methods, yarn bases and dye brands ever since. I'm a creature of habit in many ways, but when it comes to dyeing, I love variety and trying new things, and never quite knowing what is going to emerge from the dye pot. To this day, many of the colourways in my shop are one of a kind (although if you see an older colourway you like, I'm happy to attempt reproducing it, and can usually get pretty close).

I'm a bit of a colour nerd. I have always been fascinated by colours and the myriad ways you can combine them to tell a story. Even as a child, I never got tired of rearranging my pencils into colour palettes. I find a lot of inspiration all around me, and especially love experimenting with bright, bold and unusual colour combos - yarn is the perfect canvas for these experiments and it never gets boring.

I've become particularly taken with dyeing sock yarns as I love to knit socks - they are the perfect portable knitting project, don't take too long to complete (my attention span doesn't allow for large items), make great presents, and once you've mastered the basics, they are relatively easy to make, even though they look complicated. If you would like me to make socks for you, please get in touch - I love custom orders. :-) You can now find some of my socks for sale in my other Etsy shop:

I live with chronic pain and some other health issues that plague me from time to time, and have had to take some lengthy breaks from dyeing because of them, but as you may have noticed, I will always bounce back - it's my life motto, pretty much!

Thank you for visiting my shop - I truly appreciate all the support I have received from my customers!

Let's face it - when you are a teenage boy of a certain age, being listed here is just totes uncool. But whether it's cool or not, he is a great helper and he does know the difference between a 3-ply and an 8-ply yarn.

Items ship from Australia, and I'm happy to ship anywhere in the world.

~ Dispatch Times:

All items listed in my shop are in stock and ready to be shipped within 1 - 2 business days, except for custom made items.

~ Shipping Costs:

2 or more items: International shipping is generally only AU$1 extra for each additional item. (Etsy has removed the option to easily see these costs without adding the items to your cart.) Australian shipping is a flat rate of $7.80.

I only charge actual shipping costs, and any overcharges over $1 will be refunded. Shipping rates increased on April 18, 2016.

~ International Shipping & Tracking:

International orders are sent via Economy International Post as a default option - this is the most economical air mail option, which does not include tracking.

Standard International Post includes tracking and is a little bit faster, but will add an average of AU$7.50 to the shipping price shown. Please select the shipping upgrade if you would like to use this option.

Sea Mail is now only available for parcels weighing over 2kg, but may still be an economical option for large orders - please contact me if you would like to arrange this.

Within Australia I generally use pre-paid satchels, which include tracking.

~ International Shipping Times:

Economy International Post: 10+ business days
Standard International Post: 6+ business days
Sea Mail (2kg or more): 30+ business days

These shipping estimates are new as of April 18, 2016.

Shipping times may also vary depending on a few factors such as your proximity to a major airport, severe weather, issues at postal or customs facilities, increased mail volume prior to big holidays, etc. Fortunately delays are rare. If an item has not arrived after 5 weeks, please get in touch and I will get Australia Post to investigate.

~ Customs Fees & Duties:

International customers please note that any customs charges, duties or taxes incurred at your end are the buyer's responsibility. This is basically a fee your country may charge you for importing goods. Please check with your local post office if you are unsure about your country's customs regulations. I am unable to mark items as gifts or declare a lower than actual value as doing this is against the law.

Please contact me if you'd like to arrange a local pick-up.
Refunds and Exchanges
Happy customers are the most important thing to me! Please contact me if you are not satisfied with an item or any part of your experience with my shop, and I will do everything I can to rectify the situation.

~ Item Not As Described, Damaged or Lost In The Mail:

If an item is faulty, damaged or lost in transit or significantly not as described, I will issue a full refund (or offer a replacement), including all shipping costs.

~ Change of Mind/Buyer's Remorse:

I accept returns if you change your mind on a purchase, however in that case I am unable to refund any shipping costs. Returned items must be in original, unused condition and must be mailed back within 14 days of receipt. Please contact me as soon as possible if you intend to return an item, and please retain proof of shipping until I have received back the item and issued your refund.

Custom-made items are exempt from change of mind refunds and may only be returned if they are faulty, damaged or significantly not as described. Once again, should this ever happen, please talk to me so we can work out a solution.

Frequently asked questions

Yarn Care

My yarns are dyed to be colourfast (in a normal washing machine cycle) and are rinsed thoroughly after dyeing, although in the interest of preserving water, I do not go overboard. A small amount of bleeding may occur in the first wash - this is normal, particularly for very bright, intense colours, and should not affect the actual colour of the yarn. Some colours such as bright turquoises, very bright greens and some pinks and yellows are more prone to bleeding. To minimise this, I recommend washing your finished knitted item in cold water for the first time.

While they are not usually shown in the pictures, all my yarns come with a label that includes basic care instructions.

I hate knots in yarn and I'm sure you do too! They are annoying but sadly inevitable - they happen in all types of yarn, from bargain bin stuff to luxury yarn. I do my best to keep them to a minimum and I re-skein and knot check all my yarns before listing them for sale. I make every effort to mention any knots in my listings. Skeins with more than one knot are offered at a reduced price.

Custom Dyeing, Wholesale, Bulk Discounts, Trading

I am open to all of the above, so please don't hesitate to ask. Enquiries are welcome!

Where do your yarns come from? Can you order in a different yarn base for me?

I source my yarns from established Australian and European suppliers. Depending on the type, I can order in different yarn bases at relatively short notice. I'm also always open to suggestions if you know of a great yarn base that I should stock.

How do you dye your yarns?

I use quality acid dyes, which work best for animal fibres such as wool and silk. Acid dyes may sound a bit scary, but they are very safe and generally low toxicity. Unlike some dyes, they do not require heavy metal mordants.

The acids most commonly used to set the dyes are white vinegar or citric acid. I use citric acid as it is odour-free and economical.

What is Etsy? Do you run Etsy?

No, I do not. :-) Etsy is a selling platform that is home to many thousands of individual shops.

Etsy may also choose to display similar items from other shops underneath my items, especially on mobile/app versions. I have no control over what other items may be shown to you. I am not responsible for the content of other shops' listings, nor am I associated with those shops.

Are my details safe with you? What do you use them for?

Yes! I take your privacy very seriously. Any newsletters, review reminders etc. that you may receive are sent to you by Etsy, not by me. If you are getting too many (or not enough!) of them, you can change your email preferences in your Etsy account settings. I will only ever contact you if a current order from my shop requires it and will not send you any spam messages, ever!

Your address details are only used to process your order. I do not have access to your financial details.

End of FAQ - thank you for reading! :-)
