About

I love to create!

I became an Etsy shop owner a few years ago to showcase my mixed-media and photography work. Since then, I have been actively pursuing the craft of metalsmithing as well. Growing up in New England and spending a lot of time by the ocean and being a collector of rocks and seaglass, I have always dreamed of creating beautiful objects with my sea finds.

My shop reflects the different mediums that I am feeling inspired to work on at the moment. Thanks for stopping by!

Welcome to Special J Creations. My name is Johna and I love making artwork and jewelry inspired by my passion for surfing, all things ocean and many things nature.

Right now in my shop you will find wearable art created with found seaglass from various surf adventures and coastal wanderings. I love to incorporate seaglass, seashells and precious stones - often mixing all three into unique and beautiful sea inspired creations. At other times you may also find my surf-inspired, mixed media fine art pieces. I tend to focus on one or the other.

All of my seaglass is genuine and handpicked from the beach by me. Occasionally, I am lucky enough to be gifted with a parcel of seaglass and I will never refuse an offering of my favorite mermaid treasure! I have an uncanny knack for remembering where I found each piece and I am meticulous about sorting my collection. All of my stones are genuine and natural. All of the turquoise I use is genuine, natural and mostly American mined. All of the wampum I use is hand-carved. My wampum beads and cabochons are native-made, some are vintage native-made and some are from a lapidary/jeweler/craftsman from Cape Cod, MA. I strive to include as much information as possible about the materials I use in my creations and to only use materials with positive karmic vibrations.

I work in sterling silver, brass and copper. All metals are sourced ethically, some are recycled and virtually all of my metal scraps are upcycled and reintegrated into my pieces.

I love custom orders and would be happy to collaborate with you on creating the piece of your dreams!

Shipping
Shipping prices include the postage fee as well as jewelry boxes, packing materials, etc. This all gets added into the shipping price.

WITHIN THE UNITED STATES:

All parcels ship USPS Priority Flat Rate and usually arrive within 3-5 business days (if not sooner!). This option always includes a tracking number.

INTERNATIONAL ORDERS:

Shipping prices depend on the size and weight of each item. I usually send USPS First Class which they say will arrive in 7-10 business days depending on your location.

The actual shipping price MAY be different from the amount I have set to appear automatically. I will always double check and let you know if it is more or less.

According to the postal service a parcel may occasionally get held up in customs, or there may be a customs fee. You are responsible for finding out about your country's customs law and paying them. I will be able to provide you with a reference number for customs.

*** I do not give tracking numbers for international orders. There IS an option to add tracking and it will increase the shipping by around $25 - possibly more. This is something I will have to inquire about at the post office on a case by case basis but keep in mind that it can be quite costly depending on your location. If you want a tracking number added please let me know. ***

Please let me know if you have any additional questions about international shipping.

Items that are *made to order* also require the 5-7 days for production prior to shipping - unless we have a prior agreement.

LOST ORDERS:

Unfortunately, occasionally an order will get lost in the mail. For this reason - especially for international orders you may want to consider adding on additional tracking. Please let me know if you would like to set this up.

For Domestic orders, I always ship Priority Flat Rate with tracking.
Refunds and Exchanges
If for any reason you are unhappy with your product, I will be happy to replace or refund your purchase within reason on a case by case basis.

Regarding ring sizing: You are responsible for providing the correct ring size. Items may not be returned/exchanged/refunded due to ordering the wrong size. If there is any question about size, it is always best to get measured at a jeweler.

If something arrives broken (yikes!) please contact me right away.

Please read product descriptions carefully. Make note of ring sizes, materials used and product description. This is included for every piece. If you have a question that is not covered, please feel free to ask me.

Please note that CUSTOM ORDERS can not be refunded. If you order something then it has been made specifically for you and can not be sold to someone else.
Additional policies and FAQs
CUSTOM ORDERS:

I LOVE custom orders. Some of my favorite pieces have been collaborations with folks who love my work, love seaglass and want something special.

The process often requires taking photos of seaglass, stones and shells.

Once the pieces have been selected, I will usually make a couple of sketches with options to choose from - unless I feel I have nailed it in one sketch.

I will also go over bezel styles, finishing options, etc.

If you would like custom stamping on the band or on the backplate, that can also be done. I will need to know about this so that I can price your piece accordingly. It also needs to be designed in before production can begin.

I am easy to work with and would love to make you something that is unique, one of a kind and speaks to your soul.

Custom orders will require a 50% non-refundable deposit.

Custom orders are non-returnable.

CARING FOR YOUR JEWELRY:

It is best to avoid any wet or extreme activity while wearing your *bezel set* jewels (surfing, dishwashing, showering, gardening, etc.). This would be excluding a more simple, rugged piece (such as a plain silver stacking ring or an endless wave ring). I know some people - me included - who keep their endless wave rings on at all times (including surfing)! Just be more careful with the seaglass and stone pieces as they are more delicate.

Any patina finish will fade in time. This is just natural. Though I seal my pieces in Renaissance wax, silver may still change in color and will react differently from person to person depending on the amount of wear, sweat, moisturizing products, etc.

When cleaning, please avoid using harsh jewelry cleaners. Rather - try mixing a teaspoon of baking soda with some water, and lightly brush in a circular motion using a "retired" toothbrush. Rinse with water. Avoid scrubbing any stones or oxidized metal.

Please be extra gentle when cleaning a piece with turquoise or opal. For rare, natural turquoise it is best to avoid completely submerging the piece in water. Rather, use a damp paper towel or a soft cloth. If you have any questions about cleaning your pieces please feel free to ask.

CARING FOR YOUR MIXED MEDIA ARTWORK:

A little less maintenance than the jewelry creations. But it is recommended to hang/display your piece out of direct/intense sunlight as colors could fade. This is probably common sense, but still worth mentioning!
