About

Spinning Sheep Designs was created because I had way too much yarn and not enough people to make things for!

I can still remember going to my first yarn store as a young girl with my maternal grandmother in Philadelphia. We went to pick out my own ball of yarn to use. Up until then, I had been using her leftover yarn while I learned the basics of knit and crochet. Picking out my own ball of yarn gave me such pride that my grandmother believed in my work enough to buy me my own tools. I still have some of her yarn, needles and hooks that I keep to remind me of all that she taught me.

I also remember sitting down for the first time at the sewing machine with my paternal grandmother. She very patiently taught me how to cut fabric from a pattern, pin it and slowly (don't push the pedal too hard!) sew the pieces together trying very hard to keep an even seam. The shorts and sleeveless shirt may not have fit for more than a season, but the skills that I learned making that one outfit have lasted me my whole life.

These days, when it's so easy to go to the mall and buy something made on a machine, I feel that everyone needs a handmade blanket or sweater or scarf. Something that is unique and made with love and when it's used, you just feel a little bit more special. I firmly believe that babies appreciate this the most. To wrap a baby in a handmade blanket or put on a pair of handmade baby booties, you know that the baby feels the love that goes with it. Regardless of who made the item, it's always better when it's made by hand.
These are the reasons that I started Spinning Sheep Designs. Not only do I feel that I positively pass on the legacy of my grandmothers, but I also want everyone to have the opportunity to give or receive a hand crafted item. They really are that much better!

My maternal grandmother taught me to knit and crochet when I was three years old. My paternal grandmother then taught me to sew when I was six. I have been crafting ever since!
