About

Minimalist design, screen printed in Melbourne

I love DIY.

In the 1980s I was a craft-a-holic - my sister and I would glue lace to everything that moved, made all sorts of things out of FIMO and created jewellery using our bead loom. The soundtrack was provided by FM rock radio stations and we even used to tape-record ourselves being the DJs on our own fictional radio programs.

In the 1990s, when I was an arts student and all I did was listen to music and see bands, I taught myself how to make websites - about music, for my favourite band - and started thinking about design and form. I also made a zine or two and had my own actual radio shows on various student stations.

In the 2000s I worked as a designer, lived overseas for a couple of years and by 2006 had decided to study design formally. While I loved it, I found myself permanently tied to a computer and was itching to get my hands dirty and make things. A friend and I did a course in screen printing and suddenly I had the ability to reproduce my own ideas and designs. Because I couldn't find fabric I wanted to sew with, couldn't find homewares that I wanted to buy, I started making my own. And that's how my wee business formed.

Now I think about new designs and new ideas all the time. I squeeze in as much creating as I can - in between walking the dog, working a part-time day job, taking photos of industrial landscapes, shopping at the local farmers market, making delicious salads and hanging out with my partner, Jed. I still love music (from Belle & Sebastian to Dinosaur Jnr and so much more) and support small-press print and online publications.

My workspace studio fluctuates between being chaotically messy and ridiculously ordered and neat - while I do like a bit of chaos, after a while find it hard to work in as I can never find anything!

The materials I work with are chosen for their natural properties and their beauty. They also have to be ethically produced with consideration for their environmental impact taken into account. Fabrics include linen, hemp and organic cotton. I also use recycled paper with a lovely matt surface.

I'm an Instagram addict, so for a near-daily update of my work and its inspiration, see my Instafeed - http://instagram.com/hellospinspin
