I joined TechShop San Jose when it opened in September 2011 and my first project was Steampunk Christmas ornaments to decorate the historic Ainsley House in Campbell, CA. Someone asked if I sold those ornaments, and I realized I had a product for Etsy! Since then, I've diversified my product line and joined the SF Etsy Street Team. But the most popular items I sell are the Steampunk Christmas ornaments and tree toppers.

Refund/Return Policy

The only surprises you get when you open your shipment should be delightful! That’s why I'm happy to answer your questions and even send work-in-progress snapshots to make sure your custom orders turn out the way you expect them to look. I pack orders carefully and take them directly to USPS instead of leaving them for the carrier, and message buyers if there will be a shipping or production delay.

Everything in my shop is handmade—OK, I use a laser robot to cut things out, but I hand-paint and hand-assemble items, sometimes custom to order. So please order carefully and discuss any details or let me know about any deadlines. I would rather cancel the order it it isn’t going to work out than ship something that won’t fit your needs or arrive on time.

I will give refunds or replacements if:

The item is “substantially not as described”
Your order arrives damaged or defective (please send photo within 14 days of delivery)
Your order is lost in transit or was shipped to an address other than the one listed on the order (or discussed in a message)
I ignored your instructions about a deadline or customization

I will not give refunds or replacements if:
The item has a minor variation in appearance from item photo or description, including color matching or surface finish (due to difference in monitors and paint variability)
Buyer complains of damage without providing documentation or longer than 14 days from delivery
Items shipped after the USPS cutoff for Christmas delivery arrive after Christmas
Custom items are canceled after production begins (design fee applies if canceled between design and production)
Delivered late with no communication of deadline, or shipped in time and carrier failed to deliver on time
Buyer is not collecting mail at the shipping address (moved, vacation)
Buyer damages item by misuse (“strength testing” items, exposure of cardboard items to weather or crushing under heavy objects)
Buyer finds typos in finished customized project after approval of text
Buyer did not ask questions about item description

I no longer ship internationally due to customer complaints because:
Buyer does not want to pay customs duties, VAT, or other local charges (it is a felony to fraudulently claim purchases are gifts or declare less than the actual value)
Delivery of item is delayed by customs processing
Payment
PayPal and credit cards only. No checks, money orders, or COD.

WHEN PAYMENT IS DUE: All payments on orders must clear before shipping. If we agree on a custom order, I will not begin design work until payment clears for the custom item listing (or at least a non-refundable design fee).

TAXES: Sales tax is added to purchases as required by state laws (and always in California).

CANCELLATION: Orders for non-custom items can be canceled before shipment, and your entire purchase price and shipping will be refunded in full to the original form of payment. Cancellation of custom items is only possible if I have not begun work on your item. A partial refund may be possible depending on the exact circumstances.

CUSTOMS: You are responsible for any fees or delays associated with Customs for your international shipment. Please do not request that I mark your purchase as a gift. Please familiarize yourself with any import restrictions or typical Customs delays before ordering. Orders for non-permitted items will be canceled.
Shipping
My preferred shipper is USPS, with UPS or FedEx available if USPS can't deliver to your shipping address. I prefer UPS to FedEx because of repeated issues with FedEx.

Orders over $35 ship for free, USPS First Class (or Priority Mail if they are over the weight limit for First Class). Orders below $34.99 use calculated USPS First Class shipping. All orders qualify for paid upgrades to USPS Priority Mail.

Please do not request overnight shipping without contacting me to ensure I can pack and ship your order by the local deadline.

If you don't receive your order within a reasonable time after mailing, please check your tracking and contact your local post office. Carriers often mark items "delivered" before they actually deliver them. I'll be happy to help you troubleshoot or replace your order if it has been lost in the mail.

SHIPPING NOTIFICATIONS: Shipping notifications are automatically generated when I print your shipping label; if the label is printed after 7:30 PM local Pacific Time, it is likely to go out the following day.

EXPECTED SHIP DATES: Shipping dates are calculated automatically based on estimated times in the shipping profile, not actual production time based on my order queue, stock levels, or customization. If you need an item sooner than the estimated date, please Convo me to see if I can ship early (especially on stock items).

PACKING: I pack all items thoroughly to avoid crushing or shifting in transit, as well as enclosing water-sensitive items in a plastic bag to protect from moisture.

RECEIVING PACKAGES: You are responsible for providing an accurate address and taking delivery of your items from the shipper (USPS unless we arranged UPS or FedEx). Please schedule your shipments so you will be in town to accept them or arrange for them to be held at your local post office (or other pickup point).

INSURANCE: I insure all orders over $25 that are shipped via First Class Mail. Priority Mail is automatically insured to $100 and larger orders will be insured for full value. If an item is lost or damaged in shipping, you agree to provide any photos or other documentation required for an insurance claim.

COMBINED SHIPPING: If you place two orders that can be combined, and you don't hear from me about refunding shipping overages--please contact me.

OVERNIGHT DOMESTIC SHIPPING: Please contact me BEFORE placing an order and requesting overnight shipping. I may not be able to assemble your order in time to ship, and in any case, I would need to invoice you for overnight shipping (minimum $50 via USPS). Overnight orders placed without prior authorization (and payment) will be canceled due to previous fraud attempts.

INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING: I have stopped shipping internationally due to problems with Customs fees/delays. However, shipping to US military bases is still available via APO/FPO.

CUSTOMS: (Not currently applicable) You are responsible for paying applicable Customs fees/duties and for knowing how long it takes for items to clear Customs in your country. If you order an item I can't legally ship to your country, I will notify you and cancel the order with a complete refund. I do not mark items as gifts or claim less than the purchase price to try to evade Customs duties, as this is illegal. I can't take responsibility for timely release of orders from Customs, just shipping by the agreed-on date.

OTHER CARRIERS: If you need to use UPS or other non-USPS carriers, please list this in the notes on your order. I can refund the automatic USPS shipping after I get a shipping quote from UPS and receive payment.
Additional policies and FAQs
I enjoy collaborating with buyers to create something truly unique that suits them perfectly. I do wholesale, but not via Etsy, so please contact me via Facebook or email.

PARTS SALES: In the past, I have sold bulk shipments of cardboard gears to other Makers. However, as of November 1, 2013, this is only available February 1 to September 1, and turnaround time will be based on other schedule constraints such as vending events and wholesale orders of finished goods.

MATERIALS: My ornaments and toppers are made from upcycled corrugated cardboard shipping materials, as documented in the listings. The surfaces of these materials vary, and corrugations may be visible. Ornaments and other decorative items usually have a front and back side, with construction and/or possible surface defects on the back. If you plan to hang your item where the back will be visible, please discuss this so I can make the back as visually appealing as possible given the methods of construction.

Items made from other materials, such as MDF or acrylic plastic, also have a front and back. Jewelry pieces will have a smooth back without etched decoration, and tree toppers will have hardware attached visibly. If you need a double-sided tree topper for a free-standing tree that is not against a wall, Convo me and we can do a custom listing.

PRIVATE LISTINGS: I am happy to set up a private listing for customized or custom items, or a shopping list of stock items either for convenience or privacy when purchasing gifts. However, stock items can only be held 24 hours before payment and will be canceled after that time if the order has not been purchased.

CUSTOMIZATION: I am happy to customize your order--substituting colors, adding inscriptions. However, this may require additional manufacturing time that will delay shipping.

CUSTOM ITEMS: I can also work with you to design custom items. If substantial design work is required (drawing, prototyping) this time will be billed at $50/hr. These services may not be available during November-December due to the holiday rush, but please ask.

COLOR MATCHING: Exact color matching is not available due to variation in monitors, the appearance of paint over different primers, and manufacturers' changes to paint formulas. (Likewise for ribbons on ornaments and wire coils on tree toppers. This is particularly true during 2020 when I am trying to minimize shopping trips and will substitute something aesthetically pleasing instead of going shopping.)

RAIN DELAYS: If rain or other inclement weather affect my ability to fill your order (laser cutting or painting), I will notify you as soon as possible and refund your order if it can't be shipped in time.

ABOUT CARDBOARD ITEMS: Cardboard gears are laser-cut and spray painted and are likely to smell like spray paint and lightly-charred cardboard until they air out completely. Unpainted laser-cut parts will have a very distinctly barbequed odor. Chipboard smells downright nasty when laser-cut. Cardboard laser-cut items are not fireproof, waterproof or toddler-proof, but at least they won't shatter if your cats or toddlers knock them off the tree.

ABOUT ACRYLIC PLASTIC ITEMS: Acrylic jewelry is shatterproof but its finish is relatively delicate. Protect your jewelry from scratching against rough or metal objects, do not rub with paper towels, and do not clean with alcohol or Windex (or other ammonia-based window cleaner). Eyeglass lens cleaner, Brillianize, and Novus #1 seem to work well without removing paint. Metallic and colored accents are added with various types of craft paints and should withstand a quick wash, but not ultrasonic cleaners or soaking. Scratched acrylic can be buffed with Novus #2 and non-woven fabric.

WHOLESALE/CONSIGNMENT: If you are a retailer interested in carrying my finished work in your store, let's talk! However, if you are outside Santa Clara County or Santa Cruz County, I would prefer to sell wholesale than consignment due to logistics.
