Even before I started reading, I was enamored that the zine is of such a lovely, petite size. This is my first batch of purchases from Aijung, and the art really is lovely. The style isn't usually something that I find myself veering to, but there's a certain sensibility that Speaks, if that makes sense to those who are reading this review. I've been mending my heart since spring of 2015, and my experience with the Genius (Love) zine is one of connection/resonance. Thank you for your work, its simplicity, and its particular ethos.

Minutiae No. 2 starts with a dedication to those who are sometimes lost and to those who help the lost ones along their respective journeys Forward. That's totally applicable to me, a lost college student who's on the brink of Graduation™ at this very moment. Sometimes I feel helpless, and the world is, indeed, very much daunting. Sometimes I question my own decisions and (try to) apply white-out (liberally or maybe not enough) all over my life. This was another evocative read from Aijung's zines, and I feel that this zine is one of those things that help me along the way of rediscovery/recovery/healing/finding something at all/etc. Thanks for your work. :)

Delightfully teeny and definitely has a feeling of 'on-the-go,' which you'd understand if you also purchased this and gave it a read. Such an adorable little gem. It's simultaneously lighthearted and heavy (through the lens of my own subjectivity), and there's a subtle sweetness that coexists with something stronger, something More. Thanks, Aijung, for allowing your readers to follow you along these moments, stretches of time, and whatever else in between.

I adore attention to detail and the complexity in simplicity. I love the minute details that Aijung recalls in Minutiae No. 1. The work evokes flashbacks of my own moments of the past, spent in the summers of Southern California and even when I lived back in Korea--it isn't evocative in the sense that I have experienced the exact same things, but in that I felt nostalgia and More as I read through. Minutiae No. 1 is a perfumed piece of work to me, and if you're a Korean diasporic person reading this review, maybe the word 'perfumed' is something with which you can identify.

Since my other reviews are relatively long, I'll keep this one simpler (edit: it ended up long-ish anyway, sorry): In-Between is so relevant to me. For so many reasons. If you're a person who is in-between anything at all, I think you'll find this a validating, evocative read. A lot of what I read in this zine mirrors my own thoughts, conclusions (are they really conclusions?), and etc. about myself, my life, and life, and everything else. All this and the use of liminal spaces = excellent, so so so excellent and rich to me. So good. So so so good.

Minutiae No. 3 feels like then and now, now and then. It feels like everything in between then and now, now and then. There's a sense of temporality in the text, in the art, and in the design. I haven't been particularly articulate this summer, so I'm not sure that I could do my experience with this zine any justice. Buy one and give it a read?

About

All the Little Details.

Sprout Head is the moniker for Richmond, VA-based artist Aijung Kim.

I am an artist, printmaker, zine-maker, illustrator, writer, and aspiring children's book creator. I make art inspired by nature, whimsy, simple joys, and a bit of magic.

I sell my work at gallery and craft shows, in shops around the country, and online through my Etsy shop, which I opened back in the summer of 2007. I started with hand-screenprinted t-shirts, tiny letterpressed prints, and holiday ornaments. My shop has since evolved to offer a variety of illustrated paper creations. I create handmade linocuts and prints, illustrated poetry and prose zines, blank cards reproduced from my original artwork, and a deck of symbolic oracle cards called "The Golden Moth Illumination Deck."

I love to work with my hands, channeling ideas and emotion into my work. I am an obsessive person by nature, so the repetitive motion of printmaking - particularly carving linocuts - eases my nerves and allows me to focus on patterns and images. I also love making zines - it excites me to merge visual art and the written word. With zines, I can express myself through poetry and prose by chronicling life in all its mundane yet important details. Each of the images on my notecards has been carefully chosen from my original artwork in drawing, painting, printmaking, and fiber art to reflect a whimsical mood and the magic of everyday life.
