About

Through the Stained Glass Looking Glass

It all started with taking a stained glass class many moons ago. I was enthralled with how light played through the glass in different ways, and my love for the art has only grown over the years.

Making stained glass art is akin to assembling a jig saw puzzle. You can take an image of anything, divide it into pieces, cut them out and put them back together. The artistic part is designing the piece using the best placement of glass and solder lines, and the colors and textures of glass to create the mood you want. The quality craftsmanship is in cutting and shaping the glass to fit perfectly, foiling each piece evenly, and soldering in smooth even lines.

Glass fusing is a very different art form that relies not only on precision glass cutting, but also on skilled use of a glass kiln to achieve just the right level of fusion for the look you want, while ensuring the glass does not shatter in the process. And then there is the element of the "kiln gods" that seem to require a sacrificial piece every so often no matter what you do...

All of my pieces are made with high quality glass and materials, and shipped quickly. Each piece I create has a special meaning to me, and hopefully they will find a special place in the hearts of those who buy them too!

Frequently asked questions
Custom Orders

I am happy to custom create a unique stained glass or fused glass piece for you, or modify an existing design to meet your needs! Just message me with the details of what you're looking for, and include the dimensions you need and your zip code so I can calculate shipping. I can create from photos or other images, so please feel free to attach a picture or two to help me understand your design needs.

I will provide you with a draft pattern and quote to approve. Once we work out all the details, I will create a custom listing for you to use to purchase it, and will then create the piece as agreed upon. Turnaround times will depend on my current work load, and the size / complexity of the piece requested, but will be quoted up front.

Care instructions

Naturally, all glass items should be handled with care to prevent breakage!

Hanging Tips: Rectangular panels should be hung from TWO separate chains or wires so that they are vertical to the piece. This will prevent the frame from warping over time.

Suction cup hangers should only be used for pieces weighing less than two pounds. Clean window well before adhering suction cup. Wipe a VERY thin film of cooking oil on inside of cup for better adhesion. Check cup bond periodically.

It is normal for the solder and framing to dull/tarnish over time. You can choose to let it age naturally, or you can clean/polish it with a stained glass polish. Car wax works well too.

Clean the glass with a soft dry cloth if smudged or dirty.

Gift Messages

I am happy to enclose a personalized note with your order if it is a gift being shipped directly to the giftee! Just include the message you would like in the notes of your order.

Made to Order Items

Please note that because no two pieces of glass are exactly alike, made to order pieces may have slight variations from the ones pictured.

Colors and Shades

Part of the beauty of stained glass is how it takes on different appearances in different lighting and angles. This can also make it challenging to photograph. I make every effort to portray accurate colors in the photos on each listing. However, due to the inherent nature of stained glass, as well as the variations inherent in different computer monitors, actual colors may appear slightly different in your home than what is shown in my shop photos. I do believe you will find that each item will actually look BETTER in person than in the photos! (At least that's what my customers have told me!)

Additional Shipping Info

I ship all items in very well-padded packaging, as I want to be sure they arrive safely! Most items are shipped via USPS Priority Mail with tracking and insurance. Jewelry is shipped via USPS 1st Class Mail with tracking.

I use recycled boxes when possible to help keep costs down as well as help the environment. They are often sturdier than the USPS boxes too.

In the rare event that your item arrives damaged, I require that you please notify me via Etsy message within 5 calendar days of receipt (as indicated by USPS tracking) and include photos of the damaged piece and packaging. Please keep all original packaging. I will file a USPS claim, and you can decide if you prefer a refund, or a replacement.

The Process of Creating Stained Glass Art

Stained glass art is very labor intensive. Here is what goes into making any stained glass piece, from the smallest suncatcher to the largest window:
1. Design a viable pattern for the piece
2. Determine the type and colors of glass to be used
3. Cut out the pieces of the design to use them as templates
4. Cut and grind each piece of glass
5. Wrap each piece of glass in copper foil tape, and burnish the edges thoroughly
6. Flux and solder the pieces together on both the front and back of the piece
7. If framing it, measure and cut each side of the zinc framing with a saw, and solder it in place.
8. Solder on hanging rings.
9. Thoroughly clean the piece with soap and water.
10. Apply wax to protect the finish and slow down tarnishing
