I have been painting furniture for myself and my family for years before I started my business back in 2014. I have always loved vintage furniture and I have a passion for recycling, nothing saddens me more than seeing perfectly good, sturdy furniture ending up in the local tip because the owner hasn't had the vision to up cycle it or felt that no one else would want it.

As often happens in business the business deviates from where it started and I started making minifigure frames which are now the main focus of my etsy shop.

I opened my first bricks and mortar shop in 2016 and we celebrated our 2nd year in the shop in Ruthin, North Wales, last February, which will also be my 4th year in business as State of Distress. And we have more exciting adventures planned businesswise for 2018 so stay tuned!


As from July we are moving our bricks and mortar side of the business to a much bigger premises, still in Ruthin, where we will do additional things like hold craft classes and furniture painting classes. Exciting times ahead!

State of Distress is a family run business in North Wales. We paint the majority of our stock to order in order to ensure our customers have the opportunity to have their furniture to be done exactly how they'd like it, down to the smallest details.
99% of our Frames are made to order and so come with the choice of customisation.

Because of the nature of these items, unless they arrive damaged or defective, I can't accept returns for:
  • Custom or personalized orders
  • Perishable products (like food or flowers)
  • Digital downloads
  • Intimate items (for health/hygiene reasons)

Returns and exchange details
If an item is damaged during transit you should contact us straight away and include a description of the damage done as well as pictures of the item plus the packaging it came in upon receiving it.

If you can see that an item is clearly damaged (ie badly damaged packaging) before accepting it then you should refuse delivery and insist the courier or post office return the item to sender (us). This saves you/us paying for return postage.

You will be given the option to replace or refund once we receive items back.

If the item is damaged but fixable depending on circumstances and viability we will try to arrange a professional local to you to repair at our cost.

Where items are lost in transit via courier we will refund you once we have spoken with the couriers.
If an item is sent via Royal Mail and is lost in the postal system we have to adhere to their wait times before issuing a refund as they will not compensate until they have been lost for 15 working days.

This is from Royal Mail's site information in regards to loss;
"We cannot accept a claim for loss unless 15 working days or more have passed since the item was due to be delivered (10 working days for Royal Mail Special Delivery Guaranteed by 1pm items).
Claims for loss, part loss or damage must be made within 80 calendar days of the date they were posted."

If there is a spelling mistake, which was our fault, we will replace the centre piece of frames including mount (matte).
If the spelling mistake is that of the buyers we will offer to replace it with a correct one at a reduced rate as it will be without the frame or mount.
Where paid for extra items mistakenly left out of orders we will send these out asap free of charge with instructions on how to attach them where applicable.

If you order a painted item and it is painted to your specifications then it can not be returned/refunded as it has been customised as per your request. Pictures are sent before shipping and any concerns should be raised then before it is shipped.

Customs taxes, when charged, are beyond our control and are the responsibility of the buyer.
Payment for orders must be in place before an order is started.
Please remember to include a phone number when placing an order in order for us to be able to pass this on to the courier, failure to do so can result in your item shipping being delayed.

If you encounter any issues then contact us directly and we will always do our utmost to investigate and to resolve the issues at hand.

Any customs taxes and duties fees (though rare) are out of our control and as a result these are the buyers responsibility, should they be charged.

Please note international parcels DO NOT get returned to us, there is a charge for this from the couriers which costs approximately £35, which is not cost effective for us so we will not pay for this. When the return fee isn't paid the courier company destroy the parcels. So please ensure you check your parcels whereabouts if you haven't received it after 2 weeks as once they're returned to the courier hub they will not redeliver to you and it will be destroyed and you will then need to buy a replacement should you want one.

We are not responsible for unclaimed parcels or parcels where the customer has provided an incorrect address resulting in parcel returns, which in turn will lead to parcel destruction. We will help you locate parcels if there are issues but make sure you watch the timelines after the shipping date.

UK parcels are sent first class as standard and once dispatched you will receive an e mail from etsy containing your tracking number. If you are not in when your parcel arrives you should receive a "sorry we missed you" card with instructions on how to either rearrange delivery for a convenient day or how to collect your parcel. If you do not collect within 2 weeks your parcel will be returned to State of Distress, if it is returned due to non collection and you require it to be resent the charge for returning it is paid for by you.

Frequently asked questions
How do I add personalisations?

Personalisations just need to be added to the note to seller box when checking out. No previous messages are required when the personalisations required is the wording included in the frame

How much do personalisations cost?

All personalisations are free of charge.

How long will delivery take to the US?

Standard delivery is via USPS & takes up to 2 weeks, there is a shipping upgrade available at checkout that takes 4 working days available.

Why do you need my telephone number if I am outside the UK?

The courier companies require telephone numbers in case there are any issues with access to properties or if there are customs delays.

Can you deliver to a P.O. Box?

Yes, but only in the UK or the US and only via standard shipping, other courier companies will not deliver to P.O. Box addresses.


Gift wrapping and packaging

If you would like your frame gift wrapped there is an option for this in shipping upgrades and costs £2.50.

I use themed wrapping paper related to the frame content, so Star Wars wallpaper for a Star Wars frame, where I deem appropriate but for wedding and engagement gifts I tend to use unrelated wrapping paper unless otherwise asked.

How long will it take to arrive?

After the stated processing time, which varies depending on how busy I am at any given time. the delivery time for frame varies on countries and sometimes holidays can slow down deliveries but times provided to me by courier are as follows;

Delivery to Australia takes approximately a week.

UK delivery is First Class, which in most cases means it will arrive within 1 day of posting.

Standard delivery to the US takes approximately 4 days.

EU takes approximately 4 days, as does Canada & Mexico.

All items shipped are tracked but tracking is not always specific during transit, to find your tracking number after your item has been sent you can either check the shipping e mail from Etsy or if you look in the purchases section of your account.
