On Etsy since 2011 first love

When I was 7 years old my parents took me to an antique fair. A gentleman showed me an automata singing bird under a glass dome. The bird was stunning but the real magic to me was when I saw the clockwork mechanism that drove the movement and song. Ever since then I've loved antiquities and mechanics. The only problem was there was no such thing as "steampunk" then. I only had to wait 30 years.

I studied web design and in 2001 I graduated with clients waiting. I loved it but at the end of the day I needed something tangible to unwind with. Something real. I started making beaded pins and sold them on ebay. Beaded pins led to pendants, pendants to charm bracelets. I was making a charm bracelet with a mechanical clockwork theme and I kept seeing "steampunk" while sourcing supplies. So I googled the!

For the past six years I've been working exclusively in the genre. Needless to say, I love it. It felt like coming home. And, co-incidentally, I did physically come home - back to Perth Western Australia after living in Melbourne and Sydney since 1991.

The steampunk and arts community has been very good to me. I've had a few competition wins and was part of The Antipodean Steampunk Show - a 3 year touring exhibition. I've shown at steampunk events around the country, my work was featured in the book "Steampunk Jewelry" and one of my pieces made the cover. I'm so fortunate to have a loyal clientele both in and out of the steampunk community.

I'm always trying to improve - new techniques, more details, more realistic, strange and rare supplies. I love the challenge.

When I was 12 years old I was diagnosed with Psoriatic Arthritis. I had my first hip replacement at 26 and by the time I was 30 I had both hips and both knees replaced and my right wrist permanently fused. I'll be getting a new right shoulder sometime soon. People ask where I get inspiration - I've spent many hours in hospitals so it's no wonder why bio-mechanical themes feature heavily in my work. I've had to adapt constantly - a gift that has enhanced my design work.

I always have four or five projects bubbling through my mind and I'll be opening another shop with a different product range in the new year.
