The quatrefoil and the arabesque stem from the same geometry, seen in architecture in many different cultures. I find it elegant and strong. And it looks damn fine on a buckle!
I had a lovely weekend show in Seattle and am now back to the Pike Place Market for the last of the summer travelers. If you are ever in Seattle, contact me for my market schedule or check my social media to see where I am set up!
Here is a studio shot- I love making these buckles, I have to slow down, set the rivets and hand file, and just enjoy the process.

Hammer, fire and anvil are my main tools in creating heritage buckles, belts and jewelry.

My name is Erica and I have been blacksmithing for 19 years. I apprenticed for about six years with a variety of talented master smiths, mostly learning the craft through traditional smithing techniques, making gates, railings and lighting. I opened Steel Toe Studios in 2003 in the grimy Georgetown neighborhood in Seattle, and have been making belt buckles and belts ever since. Since having a child and massively reducing the craft shows I participated in, I developed a jewelry line based on the look of my buckles, using the same techniques but in a micro scale. I sell my work online, at a few craft shows a year and at the Pike Place Market in Seattle. I also occasionally teach workshops at schools like Penland School of Craft in North Carolina and Haystack in Maine, and am planning on teaching workshops out of my own private studio.
I find profound satisfaction in making work by hand, slowly and carefully, with the intention that they become pieces that are handed down to future generations.

Steel Toe Studios was established in 2003 and is the ORIGINAL hand forged, belt buckle creator in the contemporary craft community. We primarily recycle and repurpose the majority of our buckle materials , and as a micro business, we are about as fair and equal trade as you can get, with the manufacturing done by hand, by Erica, in Seattle. The pieces we have cast are made by a boutique caster here in the US, and are categorized in the Foundry Wear section of the shop.
We strive to contribute modern, handmade, unique accessories to the indie fashion world, and to do it in a way that is conscientious and sustainable. Our work is produced with the highest regard to finish, quality crafstmanship and sustainable practices.
