About

a stitch in dye: pattern, dye, craft, and repeat

My first quilt was crafted from commercial fabric and, though I loved the process of sewing and quilting, I wasn't exactly thrilled with my fabric choices. That dissatisfaction prompted me to explore the world of hand dyeing and patterning fabric, a process that I loved almost as much as sewing.
For several years I used my knowledge of batik and shibori dyeing techniques exclusively for my own art quilts, but, eventually, with my desire to design more reproducible quilts and patterns, I also felt a need to create and sell my vision/version of hand dyed fabrics.
My fabrics, though hand drawn and dyed using an ancient technique, are meant to read as fresh and modern and in sync with today's contemporary quilt, clothing, and home dec projects.
We begin with an amazing base, high thread count pima cotton, and hand stamp or draw each piece. The fabric is then immersed for long hours in a dye vat and the wax resist is removed by boiling. What remains is cloth with an intense, deep color and a wonderful soft hand. It really is one-of-a-kind and I love making it...for myself as well as for my customers.
