Note from shop owner 3/24/2014 After much thought, a few tears and nothing but happiness as I look back, Stitch Machine is closing its virtual doors.

Thanks for 8 great years! It's been an amazing journey and I'm so happy to have met so many incredible people as a result of running Stitch Machine. Seasons have changed and I'm ready to take on new challenges that have been knocking for sometime. Thanks again to everyone who has supported me over the years!

*Any orders that have been placed in the last couple of days are shipped and should be arriving shortly! Please feel free to contact me at sarah [!at] stitchmachine.net

Cute! Amazingly good condition and super speedy shipping even during the holidays. Unnecessary but appreciated. Thanks for the super cute hair clips too!

Shipped and arrived quickly. Item was just as expected. I ended up hand embroidering a monogram on the corners and giving it as a gift -- lovely!

About

Thrifting and making fashion accessories began to interest me as a teenager. We rarely had extra money for new clothes and I wanted to stand out.

I couldn't buy a new wardrobe each season, but I always managed to create or find the brightest and most original accessories! I am still sewing and digging for purses, shoes, belts, ties and more- but now on a bigger scale. I hope visiting my shop will brighten your day, and maybe you'll find something extra special that will help you stand out as well!

My love of making things comes from my childhood. Growing up, my mom and dad were always doing projects around the house. My mom would make clothes, work in the garden, or practice an old country song on her guitar. My dad was either building something out of wood, fixing something, or playing his fiddle. There were always projects for my brother and I to work on- we hardly ever bought a gift, they were always handmade.

While I was in college for art and marketing, the handmade movement was brewing, and I began paying attention to what people were doing online. I remember discovering Austin Craft Mafia, PDX Supercrafty, and clicking through businesses and craft blogs on my roommate's slow, giant desktop computer. (This was the same year Etsy was founded.) I was thrilled to see that there were other people who were excited about making things, and they were all so professional! I also admired the new edge that these women and (some)men brought to crafting. I started brainstorming about what kind of business I could have once I got out of college.

I got a "real" job right out of college and then started Stitch Machine, funded by my salary at the time. I grew professionally and learned a lot about myself in the conservative, corporate-like setting. Although it was a stable life, leaving my professional office job in 2009 was inevitable- I was always an artist and entrepreneur at heart! I've been running Stitch Machine and working part time in a grocery store ever since. It's an incredibly hard way to make a living, but knowing that I have created my own business and taken charge of my life is what keeps me going when times are tight. This is the happiest I have ever been!

I have been making things since I was a child. I still love crafting today, and now make things for my online shop. I also seek out old fashion accessories that have lived a previous life but still have a lot of life left to give.

Stitch Machine is a line of edgy, vintage and handmade special occasion accessories. Many consist of animal friendly materials and feathers shed from free roaming Guinea Hens on my mother's North Carolina farm.
