Finding Serenity in Wood

Firstly, welcome to StoneCat Woodworks and thank you for taking an interest in me and my work.

A little about me:
I've been building things for as long as I can remember. I have found that the more worked with wood, the more energy I gained from it. I can’t pinpoint exactly what it is but, I think it is a combination of being creative, building things with my own hands, working with natural materials and bringing something from my imagination into existence. I find that I am completely centred and calm when I am working in my workshop; it's like being in another world.

A little about StoneCat Woodworks:
StoneCat Woodworks was established in early 2022 when I had begun making unique planters that were inspired by Japanese design and a love of nature. The humble planter has a much bigger impact on our lives than what we often give it credit for. Interaction with nature is essential for our wellbeing and mental health but, our modern lifestyles often result in limited contact with the natural beauty of our environment. Planters allow us to bring nature into our homes and offices, which gives us that missing connection to the environment and makes us to feel calmer and more centred. I am very fortunate to live close to several World heritage listed national parks and it is a real privilege to be able to freely explore these parks as they are so beautiful and tranquil. But even with this beauty on my doorstep, I still populate my house with planters.

Despite my love for plants, I am terrible with looking after them. Sooner or later, I will accidently forget to water them and the plant becomes, at best, unhappy. However, my lack of a green thumb, pinkie, or even a toe, gave me the inspiration that I needed to put some effort into solving this problem. My first wooden product that I made as StoneCat Woodworks was ‘Equilibrium’, the desktop planter that raises the plant up when it needs watering. This means that all you need to do is look at the planter to know if the plant needs water. The change is so obvious that it is impossible to ignore. After this, I developed ‘Tranquility’, which is based on the same mechanism but is in the form of a mobile.

Another issue I have with potted plants is accidently overwatering, especially when plants are placed into pots that lack drainage holes. I wanted something that could not only absorb excess water but also provide airspaces as the bottom of the pot to allow gas exchange by the plant roots. Without this, the soil environment can become anaerobic resulting in root rot and eventually plant death. This is what led me to develop the ceramic water regulating beads, which I make together with my wife (owner of StoneCat Ceramics). We found a clay that we liked and a firing temperature that gives the beads the properties that we wanted. We also found that the beads have the added benefit of extending the water availability to the plants after the soil has dried out. The ceramic beads appear to reduce water loss by evaporation while still making the water accessible to the plant roots. These beads are included for free with every one of my planters.

I am now in the process of expanding my range of products beyond planters but have maintained that same connection with natural materials and the environment. My latest creation is a beautiful wooden leaf mobile. Its movement is mesmerizing, requiring only the slightest breeze to move.

Thank you for taking an interest in StoneCat Woodworks. If you have any questions or comments, please contact me as I love to connect with other like-minded people. I hope you enjoy the rest of your day.

I created StoneCat woodworks as I find working with wood and natural materials highly cathartic. When I am in my workshop, it is like entering another world that was built just for me.

Frequently asked questions
What can I expect from a StoneCat Woodworks product?

The products in my shop are handmade in my small home workshop. This means that each piece will be unique, with its own grain pattern and colour profile. I have tried my best to ensure the photos displayed of each piece give an accurate indication of what you will receive, but there may be some minor differences. Consider the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi, in which beauty is found in imperfection, asymmetry, and irregularity. It is these tiny differences and ‘imperfections’ that make each piece so special.

How do I care for my wooden products?

I have tested the finishes that I have applied to each piece for their intended purposes. The finish I use for the planters will tolerate water spills. However, I recommend that any spills are wiped up with a clean cloth shortly after the spill has occurred to ensure no damage can occur.

Custom and personalised orders

Typically, I only begin to make an item once I have an order. My items that contain ceramic pots may take 3-5 weeks to prepare due to the number of steps involved. Thanks for understanding!

Ensure your address is correct

Please check the delivery address carefully! If an order is returned to me after long journey across the ocean and back, I will contact the customer immediately. Unfortunately, the buyer will then be responsible for the shipping cost to a different address.

Returns are quite rare, but I encourage my customers to check their address and track the parcel, if possible, so they know if a delivery attempt has been made.

What if I have a question or a concern about a product?

Please contact me; I am always happy to help. If, for some reason, there is a problem with one of my products, contact me as soon as possible so that I can work with you to find a solution that you are happy with.
