About

Love, Loss, and a Desire for Creative Output

There was a time in my life when, for work and spirit, I moved deep into the mountains, alone, with no one familiar around me. It was fabulous; I filled my days with reading, writing, communing with nature, dancing, and art. I enjoyed a simple life and got to know myself quite deeply during this time.

As a candle lover, an alter lover, and one whom prefers natural light; I spent many of my few dollars on driving to the nearest city (1.5 hrs away), in order to buy beautiful beeswax candles to adorn my small space with. One day it clicked - Hey! I could learn to make these myself!

I started by making only enough candles for myself to use and a few to give away. It was simply a hobby to pass time and save a bit of money. Right around that time, I met a very handsome man with a gorgeous smile and bright, shiny spirit. On our first date, I brought him some hand rolled beeswax candles as a gift.

Only a few short weeks later, I received a phone call that my mother was ill and had a terminal diagnosis of cancer. I packed up and went home to the West Coast. David, only a few weeks into our relationship, but certain of our connection, came with me.

While caring for my ailing mother and readjusting to life in the city (a challenge on both levels) the candles took a pause. After several months, however, David and I craved a creative output - a hobby. But what? I mentioned to my mom while sitting beside her bed that it would be nice to get back into some art. Her response was: "why aren't you making your candles?"

After obtaining a few cases of wax, wicking supplies, and catching David up on all I knew - we learned the rest together. He created a logo, I signed up for craft markets. We beach combed for shells, experimented with unique styles, we even calculated the numerology of our business name. Stone Spiral Gifts was born.

We started off as a tiny side-table (piggybacking onto a friend's accessory booth) with only hand rolled honeycomb tapers. They sold out every time. We quickly branched out into pillars, tealights, votives, and our own specialty items like SeaLites and Mason Jar candles. We had people coming to our booth each week, putting in requests for more. Friends and family would come to our house to shop as they knew it was hard for me to get out while caring for my mother. David had been dreaming of a career change, and I of a way to earn a living from home and from my heart. We started to get excited - what else could we do??

One of our first steps was going local - sourcing pure beeswax from a nearby honey farm. We began to make our own moulds from scratch so that the candles we sell are unique to us, and a true reflection of who we are. We adjusted to standard sizes, in order to appeal to a wider audience. We started imagining the inclusion of pottery, wood working, fabric art, and body care products as well.

Sometimes we sit for hours, building SeaLites and rolling honeycomb tapers and just dreaming together about where Stone Spiral Gifts could go next.

At the time of this post, my mom is still alive; however her health is declining with each passing week. I work on my candles only after caring for her needs. Each and every time we receive an Etsy order, I go sit with her and tell her about it. She lights up as we talk about where in the world you're ordering from, what items I'm about to pour or pack for you, and if I know - what occasion you've ordered our candles for. It's so nice for her to see our business growing, and for me to know she's proud of us and what we have created.

~*~*~ Thank you to each and every one of our customers, you are more special to us than you can even know! *~*~*

UPDATE: My mother passed away peacefully on February 16, 2014. At her service we offered 300 candles, available by donation, and raised a healthy sum for our local Hospice Society.

You can now find our candles in gift shops & boutique retail stores around British Columbia, and find us on the crafter's circuit in the beautiful West Kootenays. We also have opened our very own Stone Spiral Studio, offering clay classes for kids and making beeswax candles for people like you - all around the world.

Stone Spiral Gifts continues ~ thank you for being a part of the journey!
