15 years devoted to costuming
I started SLC back in 2001 when fellow fans started asking me to make costumes for them and eagerly threw money at me for doing so. I had no idea such a thing was possible, but they liked my work and wanted me to outfit them in the same high-quality, accurate costumes that I made for myself. I happily made costumes on commission for a while as a side job, mostly to gain experience, while I worked in a professional capacity sewing banners for a sign shop. As time went on, I discovered I could go even further and chose to incorporate Strange Land Costuming as a full-time business.
I do all of the sewing myself, whether it be a commission I have to research and specialty-shop for, or a historical or original costume piece that allows me to let my imagination run wild. I have extensive knowledge of textiles and unique sewing methods, both historical and modern, and can draft patterns based solely on a person's set of measurements. When it comes to media costumes, I am all about accuracy and detail, and creating lasting garments that can be worn for years rather than single-shot throw-away costumes. Our embroidery is done on-site with a custom program, so we can add embroidered details and trim to costumes or simply make patches and fun accessories for cosplayers and nerds of all kinds.
I have more than seventeen years of sewing and costuming experience, and currently 19 awards for competition, including Best In Show at CONvergence 2009 and Best In Show Workmanship at CostumeCon 31 in 2013. I currently compete at Master level both locally and internationally, and often run panels on costuming at conventions, as well as judge masquerades. I am also the founder and current president of the Madison Area Costuming Society, a chapter of the International Costumers Guild. SLC is a home-based business housed in Madison, Wisconsin, where we love to spread the joy of costumes and cosplay.
I've been costuming since 1999 and a professional since 2000. I have over 100 satisfied customers so far and a closet containing over 30 of my own costumes, many of them award-winners - like the one in my portrait.
