Screenprints / Baltimore / Bullshit

For a while I had this whole long story talking about how I was spider man but I made screen prints and like my Uncle Ben died but then I decided that was a silly thing for silly people. My name is Luke Heister Martin, I'm a printmaker illustrator combo pack currently living in Baltimore, Maryland.

I grew up on the eastern shore of Maryland, in a tiny town called Greensboro. The entire place had one gas station called Bodies and two stop lights, and absolutely nothing else. There were far more ears of corns than there were people. I went to high school the next town over, and started taking art classes. I didn't really think much would come out of these classes, but the more I tool them the more I discovered my passion for art.

For a large majority of this time, I didn't really stick to any one medium of art. I would draw things with pen and pencil, sketch images on the margins of math tests, try out different kinds of paints and dry mediums; basically just learn a medium and then move on to the next. Except oil paints. Hate those things.

It wasn't until 2014 that I started marketing myself as an artist. At first I would get digital prints made of my paintings or drawings and just sell those to friends, but I eventually started going out to local art walks and craft fairs of the sort. In 2015 I made my first screenprint, I remember I skipped all of my classes that day to work on the small 8-inch "Hope For Nepal" screenprint. I remember after working all day on those I just felt so accomplished, having this big stack of prints that I made by hand, and not that I just printed out of a computer. I literally fell in love with screen-printing, and I was like "hey, I think this is what I want to do for the rest of m life".

I later enrolled at Towson University to go after a degree in printmaking. During this time though, the work that I was doing only continued to carry me. I took a few semesters of classes at TU, and then just jumped ship early in fall of 2016 to enter the work force and pursue art full-time. It's been a great adventure so far, and I can't wait to see where everything goes in the future. Check back for all the latest news and happenings, along with watching me figure out what creative method I'll use to pay rent next.
