My mum was a brilliant cook, her speciality was her chicken curry. The house always smelt of beautiful Indian spices on a Sunday. I remember when I was a little girl running to the kitchen holding on to my mum’s apron and standing on tiptoes to see what was bubbling on the cooker. I used to love to watch her cook.

She would talk to me about her life in India as she threw things into a pan. No recipes, no measuring ingredients. Her cooking came from the heart. And so started my fascination with Indian spices. I learnt to cook by watching my mum and always being surrounded by food, which is a big part of Indian culture.

Now I’m older I love cooking for my friends and family. A lot of my friends would ask how I made my different curries. I would tell them that if you can make a basic curry paste you can make most types of curries. My friends asked me how to make it and so I made the recipe for the masala paste. I then had the idea of supplying the spices together with the recipe in a beautiful Indian gift box with some incense sticks and a holder.

I thought it would make a great gift for someone interested in Indian cooking. And so Suman Spices was born back in 2014. I started off on eBay and was so happy with my first sale. Sales were going well on eBay and so when Droitwich (where I live) were advertising the food show, I thought let’s give it a go.

My stall had my boxes along with samples of curries for customers to try made from my spices. I also sold homemade samosas. My first food show was an amazing experience and a great success. The whole family was involved with the show. I was so happy on that day. I did a few more shows and then life got very busy with work and bringing up a young family. Suman Spices was put on the back burner.

Now the kids are older, I’m able to focus more on Suman Spices with the help of my lovely hubby. I now have a different style of boxes with lovely jars of spices to make my special masala paste. I have more ideas for the future.... more recipes....do some spice blends and maybe some videos of me cooking.
