About

Supayana's story

I started Supayana back in 2003 when I was a university student, and it has been my full-time job ever since! Things I love most in life are friends, cats, gardening, sewing, bike rides, good food, and finding vintage treasures.

After making womens' clothes for 8 years, I decided to try out baby clothes! So now I offer a selection of womens' and baby/toddler clothing. Much of my clothing features digitally printed illustrations either by myself or my illustrator friends. The fabric is printed in the USA for the woven fabrics or in Canada for the cotton/spandex. I try to use eco-friendly or at least natural/biodegradable fabrics for the rest of the fabric as often as possible. I've also been working closely with Delyla Fabrics for my sweatshirt fabrics. They're one of the few Montreal fabric mills left in existence! They make awesome organic cotton fleece right in my hometown. If you're a designer looking for high quality, eco-friendly jerseys and fleece, please work with them!

After years of trying to sew everything myself and turning down wholesale orders, I decided to start looking for some outside help! It's very important to me to keep it local and to get to know the people I am working with. Last year I started working with Services de Coupe 3P, a professional cutting service, and also a small family run sewing contractor here in Montreal to keep up with the demand of my wholesale orders. Now with Etsy's policy change, I am able to sell these items in my Etsy shop, too! I'm still a very active participant in the process. I make the original design and my own patterns. I coordinate with the cutter and sewer and lug things back and forth on the metro. I inspect each garment carefully. I take care of all of my emails with customers. I pack all of my orders and print postage myself. I'm very proud to support my local economy as I strongly believe we small designers can make a difference in bringing back local manufacturing to North America.

So that explains a little bit about my "manufacturing" process, but I am still going to be sewing at least half of the items in my etsy shop myself. Working with cutter and sewer has really freed up a lot of my time and has restored some sanity into my life. No more staying up 'til midnight to finish that wholesale order!

Well, that's all for now! Feel free to message me if you have any further questions!

Services de Coupe 3P is a professional cutter based in Montreal, QC. The company is run by Jamil, who has been cutting fabric for Canadian brands for over 25 years!

  • Sewing contractor

    Montreal, QC, Canada

I use a sewing contractor, or sewing factory, to produce some of my items. It is a small, family run business based in Montreal, Canada. I bring my cut fabric over to them and they sew up my garments, which I then wheel home in my granny cart.

    A small-scale screen printing facility.

  • Gina Osorio

    Montreal, QC, Canada

I've been working with the lovely Gina to create patterns for some of the more complicated women's styles I will be launching this spring! Gina runs a small sewing collective consisting of two other women who will be sewing my dresses.

  • Art of Where

    Montreal, QC, Canada

Run by Kate and Joey, Art Of Where is a print place that also sews the majority of my ladies' leggings. They're in a really cool space in downtown Montreal.
