I weave Twig Garden Structures that may be used to provide support for growing plants. Enveloped in green, leafy vines they morph into living shelters. Circular huts large enough for two, provide a quiet spot for a tete a tete, while others may become a lively playspace. Structures are sometimes built collaboratively, offering an opportunity for groups to experiment.
The idea of weaving with twigs began as a way to teach groups of children how to weave in a very big way. As part of an artist/farmers-in-residence team we visited schools and shared info about farm animals, conservation, food and fiber sources while providing demonstrations of shearing and wool fiber production. When asked to provide a hands-on activity for students, I developed the ‘Human Loom’. Long bamboo poles and cloth strips were used to weave a cloth 18 feet wide so 20 to 30 students could participate simultaneously. When asked to demonstrate at the Providence Waterfront Festival, I turned this structure on it’s side, putting the poles upright in the ground, and weaving in woody twigs, herbs and flowers. Beaded Twig Bracelets & buttons are fashioned from the remains.
I am alway devising the next object to create. Lamps combine twigs, stitched paper and create lovely warm glow and cast wonderful shadows. Handwoven textiles may be come soft cloth books, stitched greeting cards are a pleasure and clothing has long been a favorite to design & construct.
