Leather care 101:
Keep care of your leather jewelry and you can keep wearing it for years to come. Like any high quality material, it is durable but does require care. Here are a few tips for keeping your leather jewelry in great condition:

Keep your leather jewelry away from water, cleaning chemicals and lotion. These can damage the leather, causing it to stretch, stain or crack.

Do not store in a place where it will be exposed to the sun or heat. You can store it in a cloth bag when you aren't wearing it -- storing it with your other jewelry could mean the surface of the leather gets scratched or dented.

Be careful with leather treatments claiming water resistance. They will change the apperance and feel of the leather, have to be reapplied often and don't really work all that well.

My leather cord manufactuer recommends Obenauf's Leather Oil as a conditioner if needed.

Plated Jewelry Care

Platinum, silver, and both 14k and 18k gold are not indestructible. Plated jewelry finishes are even more fragile. With plated pieces, the gold or silver comprises only a very thin outer layer—so thin in fact, that it’s measured in microns. Plating especially in the case of gold, offers a great gold look at a fraction of the cost of 14k gold. All plated pieces will eventually turn and wear off with time. How long it will go before it turns depends on how you take care of your plated jewelry,

Here are the care tips to extend the life of your plated jewelry:

-REMOVE AT NIGHT. Do not sleep with plated jewelry, night sweat and the extra rubbing against the skin will cause the plating to wear off faster.

-STORE LIKE ITEMS TOGETHER. Do not put away gold plating and silver plating together. The different metals will cause each other to tarnish, fade and/or turn colors. Have different storage places for different colors of metals. Best to store in a dry and cool area. The bathroom is not an ideal place as the humidity, water and heat thins the plating.

-DO NOT CLEAN WITH CHEMICALS. Plating is much more delicate than pure metals. Clean often to keep shine and remove sweat and dirt that will cause items to fade. Use a damp cloth (not dripping wet) a hand towel works well. wipe down gently, use a clean towel to dry. When cleaning chains hold by the clasp and do not tug at the chain or you run the risk of busting the clasp. On anything with stones wipe gently, do not rub. Careful with corners or edges that can catch the towel and damage the item. Do not use any chemicals to clean ANY plated item. Chemicals will fade the plating.

-PUT YOUR JEWELRY ON LAST. Perfumes, creams, lotions, and makeup all contain substances than can affect plated jewelry. Some soaps and detergents are stronger and harsher than others. Any substance that isn’t PH neutral can potentially affect your plated jewelry. Put on jewelry on after lotions, creams and perfumes have dried and your makeup has been applied.

-DO NOT WEAR WHILE BATHING OR SWIMMING. Water can seriously harm your plated jewelry items. Chlorine and other chemicals added to pools and water will cause it to fade and thin the plating.

-DO NOT WEAR WHILE EXERCISING. Last but not least, one’s own body chemistry can be harsh on plating. Just like fruit, some people are more acidic than others. Depending on one’s diet, it’s not uncommon for chemicals perspired through the pores of the skin to cause plated jewelry to tarnish and discolor.
