I'd have a bit of everything please, and yes, more is more

Swing Fibers: Textile Art and Jewellery

I create colourful textile art and wearables that blend macrame, weaving, and crochet techniques. My wall hangings are my emotional antidote to the minimalist monochrome aesthetic of my new home, Berlin: more is more! It's ironic that it is Berlin that drew out the colour drama queen in me. I also draw inspiration from tales of colours and nature. I prefer to use foraged branches for my wall hangings.

For Swing textile art and wearables, I pursue an ecological agenda. My favourite materials are upcycled t-shirt jersey yarn, recycled cotton cords, sustainably farmed merino wool, and natural uncoloured wooden beads.

How Swing started

In my previous lives, I was a law school graduate, a social geographer, university lecturer, and development researcher. If I try to trace where this all began, my love affair with yarn began as a distraction from writing my doctoral dissertation with a baby on my lap. I grew up in the tropics and it was only when I moved to Germany that I became acquainted with wool at the ripe age of 30. One day, tired of my dissertation, I asked my mother to teach me crochet. I still remember how she literally begged me to stop. After 5 hours, I still couldn't finish a tiny swatch of single and double crochets (I still have that swatch!). But the damage was done.

I am Zoe, and I am an addict. To yarn and wool. After my yarn hoarding reached critical mass, I wondered if I should not just reincarnate myself as a creative. My friends have always asked me when I would grow up and settle for one thing at last. So the logical answer to my flitting between cities and jobs, and now having three kids to feed, was: I am going to sell things I made on Etsy. Yes, yes, my old friends, I will grow up next year, ok? Me, the girl who failed art class (and still can't draw)! And yes, Mom, I can crochet now (but still can't knit).

My textile art began serendipitously. The new owner of the wool store I frequent, spotted the macrame strap of my purse, and asked if I could make a macrame wall-hanging for her. It sold in a few hours. And so I poured my soul and energy into what little pockets of time I have from when the two bigger ones are in kindergarten and the tiny one is sleeping.

My textile art are "me". Like in my life, I couldn't decide. Weaving, crochet, or macrame? So I did everything. I hope they will find new and happy homes with you.

Don't underestimate this force of destruction. She's tested the endurance of most materials in my studio. She's also the reason why your custom order might take a little longer.
