About

Computer Programmer Becomes a Knitter

I have always loved knitting, it runs through my veins and it's in my family genes - my mother knits, both of my grandmothers knitted (and crocheted), and my beloved great aunt Max taught me to knit in the contintental style that my hands still remember. But knitting used to be something I would do to relax on the weekends in front of the fireplace, to make little gifts for friends who were expecting babies.

I have been a computer programmer since I was a kid - my dad and I used to write programs on the very first home computers that you could own. We used a TV as a monitor and a tape recorder as a hard drive. I've always been a nerd.

I started my own technology business before I'd even graduated college. And even though I always stuck out like a sore thumb (one of only 3 female programmers I know in my entire hometown), I was always passionate about my work, and I had a strong client following to show for it.

But about three years ago, my whole life turned upside down.

A lifetime of "normal" migraine headaches turned into a constant headache that still hasn't gone away to this day. And then on top of that, I get migraine headaches on as many days as not. The doctors tell me I have chronic headaches, chronic migraines and MS.

So, in a matter of just a year, I went from being a female computer programmer with a bright past and an even brighter future... to being in bed most of the time and struggling to perform simple tasks like taking a shower or cooking a meal for my family.

But on all but the darkest most painful of days, I could still knit. So that's precisely what I did.

Forrest Gump ran. And I knitted.

That first year, I knitted so many things that all 5 of our kids, plus 16 nieces and nephews, AND multiple parents and in-laws and aunts all received hand knitted gifts for the holidays and we STILL had piles of yarn and knitted things left over.

That was when my husband and I thought maybe it would be a good idea for me to start selling my hand knits.

Starting this etsy shop has easily been one of the best decisions I've made since becoming chronically ill. Every morning when I wake up, I know that I have a purpose for the day... a reason to get out of bed. I have new skills to learn, etsy videos to watch, orders to fill, and photographs to take.

I think that the same perfectionism and logical nature that made me a great programmer also make me well-suited to crafting beautiful, well-crafted clothing that can be passed down from generation to generation.

I am passionate about this work, and every morning I wake up grateful to be able to enjoy my family and knit away another beautiful day ~~

thank you for visiting sydneypaige on etsy! i hand knit and crochet baby gifts and children's clothing and toys -- practical to wear every day, lovely to dress up in, and sturdy enough to be passed down for generations. i'm hoping you'll find something here that's the perfect gift just as it is, or you'll find some inspiration to work together with me on a custom project for your loved one ~~

i use only the highest quality materials - natural wool, silk, cashmere, cotton, and bamboo. all of my items are made here in my hometown of bellingham, wasinghton, in the beautiful pacific northwest.

my goal is to make your experience to be as pleasant and memorable, so please tell me how i can best assist you! i aim to be as exceptional at customer service as i am at knitting! :-)

---------------------------------------------------------------
my current knitting wait time is: 6-8 weeks (see below for rush fees)
---------------------------------------------------------------
this is the approximate amount of time it will take me, based on my current workload, to knit any custom item(s) you order. it does not include shipping time.

Accepted payment methods

  • Accepts Etsy gift cards
Payment
payment is due at checkout, and it's easiest for me to receive payment via paypal. having said that, please convo me if you have about a special circumstance you'd like to discuss ~~
Shipping
my policy is to ship the day of, or at the latest, the day after, the payment clears. i use either usps priority mail or first class, so you can expect to receive your package in a very timely manner. if you need your package expedited, please convo me for prices.

i wrap all my items carefully and beautifully before i package them (along with a FREE GIFT)... making it perfect to send directly as a gift if you wish. i am also happy to include a handwritten note with whatever message you choose - please convo me if you would like me to include this with your package (including what you'd like the note to say) ~

------------------------------------------------------------------------
if you need to RUSH your custom order
------------------------------------------------------------------------

you can find my current knitting wait time at the top of this policies page. i'm often faster than my estimated wait time, but i'd much rather exceed your expectations than fall short! if you have a deadline that won't work with my knitting timeline, please convo me to see if i am able to expedite your order in time.

because of the extra work and long nights involved in making this happen, i charge a "rush fee" based on the listing amount (it's just an easy way for you and me to estimate the complexity of the order being rushed). here's the table i use to calculate rush fees:

listing totals $50 or less : 20% rush fee
listing totals $51 - $100 : 15% rush fee
listing totals $100 or more : 10% rush fee

{ if you need it rushed even more than that, you can also pay for USPS express mail so that once i've knit as quickly as my two hands can knit, it will ship to you as quickly as the postal folks can get it to you! :-) please convo me for specifics }

------------------------------------------------------------------------
the holidays are coming!!!
------------------------------------------------------------------------

i love the holiday season. gift wrapping is FREE (i use natural, beautiful wrapping: kraft boxes, tissue paper, festive washi tape and ribbon). i'm happy to enclose a handwritten card, as well! please order early, though - i'll post custom order and shipping deadlines as they come closer. happy holidays!
Refunds and Exchanges
i think you'll find that my return and refund policy goes above and beyond what you'll find anywhere else. i want you to be happy, and i'll go to as close to the ends of the earth as i can to make sure it happens.

i stand behind my skills, and my products. so if you are not happy AT ANY TIME, please return your purchase to me and i will happily give you a FULL REFUND. in fact, i'll refund your money as soon as you decide to return it, and I WILL COVER ALL SHIPPING {USPS first class where available}.

this leaves you with none of the risk ~ i want you to be ecstatic with the color, size and feel of your purchased items!

(non-small-print: this assumes the item has not been worn or washed, other than tried on, of course)

as far as etsy feedback is concerned, i will go ahead and leave you positive etsy feedback after two weeks if i haven't heard from you, assuming you are happy with your item!
Additional policies and FAQs
i highly appreciate and value feedback from my customers! it provides valuable information for people browsing my shop, and it also lets me know that the item has arrived safely on your doorstep and that you're happy with your handmade items. if for any reason you are less than satisfied, please contact me and I will try to resolve the issue as quickly as possible. thank you so much! ~~
