You don't have to read about Taryn Grace, but If you wish to learn about the artist herself....... Here is where it all began below...

Artist's Story:

"Attending one of the best public schools in the United States, I was given an amazing opportunity to explore many avenues of potential career paths. Growing up in Marietta, Georgia was a blessing. The one thing is lacked in my opinion, were artistic opportunities. Due to this I struggled with what I was meant to do. I attended Kennesaw State University immediately after graduating Walton High School. After two years of beginning to work towards a business degree, I had a change of heart and decided to change my major to psychology. It had always interested me, but six months later it still didn't feel right.

About this time, my Grandmother traded a local potter some tax work for a free lesson. She didn't care to really take the pottery lessons, so I went in her place. I immediately knew this was a great outlet for me. Ever since I've been covered in clay. Once I had a lot of pieces, I started to run out of room. This is when I decided I needed to start selling my work. In just eight years, the business has grown larger than I thought it would. I love what I do and am truly thankful every time I see someone appreciate and use my ceramics.

Once I had my business going, I switched my major one more time to Environmental horticulture. I transferred to Chattahoochee Technical College's Program and finally my puzzle felt complete. I had taken the two things I loved most and made sure to do them every day. See- my second love was gardening. I loved to work in my yard and experiment with new plants. However I never considered making it a second career. Within the next year, I was able to finally graduate with my Associates in Environmental Horticulture, the horticulture diploma, and the Landscape Specialist certificate.

In between pottery orders, you will now find me designing and even sometimes completely saving landscapes across Georgia.

I might still be what those would call a "starving artist", but my soul is full. For that I will always be thankful."

Now Taryn is giving lessons herself, using the same kiln and wheel she learned for years on. If you are interested in taking lessons from Taryn, please e-mail her at TarynGraceDesigns [!at] gmail.com for more information. Lessons are given in Acworth, Georgia in Taryn's studio.

The Pottery process

1. The piece is thrown on the wheel and/or assembled (1 day)
2. Then the piece must dry (5-15 days depending on size/thickness).
3. The piece is sanded smooth and put in line to be fired (times vary due to where I am currently in a firing cycle, but usually 7-14 days)
4. The piece is bisque fired once enough pieces are in the kiln to make an efficient firing. ( 3 days to fire and cool )
5. The piece is cleaned and prepped for glazing. (1 day)
6. Then the piece is glazed. (1-2 days)
7. Then the piece goes into the final glaze firing once the kiln is full. ( 3 days to fire and cool)
8. Once cool, the piece is ready to be sold. :-)
