William "Guillermo" Spratling to Taxco Creations S.A. DE C.V.

My fraternal uncle, William "Guillermo" Spratling, founder and maestro of the renaissance of the silver jewelry industry in Taxco, Mexico, from 1928, until his untimely death in a car accident in 1967, had asked me as a 12 year old to follow in his footsteps.

The year was 1963. He advised me to complete my schooling and he would then train me in his trade, so I may help take over the business into the next generation. I loved and appreciated the design and fabrication of jewelry that I had learned from William and his maetros during vacations at his ranch and workshop Taxco El Viejo, and assured him I would be ready to join him after graduation. That was Plan A.

Upon entering my senior year, my father, a close Sigma Chi brother of William at Auburn University, then known as Alabama Polytecnic Institute, informed me of William's passing.

Sadened by this news, obviously, and also in the Vietnam Era draft cycle, I decided to deploy Plan B.

It was now 1968, so off to college I went.

After a 40 year career in building, road and bridge design, and construction, we all experienced the global recession/depression of the fall of 2008.

My parent company, Mitt Romney's Bain Capital, exercised downsizing, layoffs and early retirement plans on everyone, and I found myself unexpectedly retired, with the better part of a decade of good working years left.

While waiting for the economy to rekindle, and trying to reinvent myself, I had an epiphany. Why not incorporate a Plan C, and go follow my legacy?!

I decided to pack it all in, and return to my home away from home down here in Taxco. It was now early 2010 and I founded the company called Taxco Creations S.A. DE C.V., a registered Mexican company, and extablished residency as well.

Taxco Creations is a "Green " company in that we use precious and semi precious estate gem stones from the New England area, and incorporate them into unique and one of a kind designs, using artinsans who apprenticed from maestros who were understudies of William originally. We specialize in setting our gem stones in solid fine sterling silver of .950 quality, as we hopefully bring about the next generation of world famous Taxco, Guerrero, Mexico, fine silver jewelry.
