The thrill of the hunt
I grew up surrounded by antiques and often made my mother take me to garage sales and antique stores; always on the lookout for a treasure. Ahh, the thrill of the hunt! Ever since high school I always said if I won the lottery, I'd open up a vintage resale shop. Etsy has finally made that persistent girlhood dream a reality!
At the end of 2010 when my husband was away for the winter in Antarctica (he's a glaciologist) I was bored and a little lonely and started picking in real earnest. That's when the idea of an Etsy store came to me; I would get the satisfaction of finding new treasures but would share them with other people since I didn't own a 10,000 square foot house and had no intention of NOT hunting. By the following summer Temple of Vintage was born.
I pick for the shop using my gut instincts. I only buy items I am willing to own and show off with pride in my own home. I have an ardent love of SUBTLE Mid Century design; think Bertha Schaeffer vs Adrian Pearsall. The simpler the design, the more versatile the piece for your home. I believe decor items should not compete for attention, each piece is unique and essential for the vision that is your home. That being said, I have very eclectic tastes and can appreciate any number of design styles from Danish Modern to Art Deco and Asian but I do believe there can be too much of a good thing. That's why I like to mix things up in my own home, where an Art Deco buffet happily coexists with an Eames DCM chair and an antique Chinese silk panel hangs out with a Jean Cocteau drawing. The shop is an extension of my own design sensibilities.
Picking "turn ons" include: Nearly anything Scandinavian, vintage glass (especially Scandinavian, Italian, and French), high quality original art, studio pottery, Navajo Pottery, Italian Pottery, Art Deco metalware, Antique Asian anything, Mexican Modernist design, vintage luxury handbags and accessories (when I'm willing to part with them), and distinctive jewelry.
Family circumstances mean I get to travel often, mostly to the UK, and I always bring goodies back with me for the shop. My travel finds will always be indicated in the listing.
If you have any questions, please feel free to message me and thanks for stopping by!
Owner, Curator, Photographer
Laura left state bureaucracy in 2013 to be a full time vintage picker. She loves traveling, live indie music, spicy food, margaritas, and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. She lives in Austin, Texas with her scientist husband and two cats.
The operative word in my store name is "Vintage", that being said, I cannot guarantee the full provenance on many of my items, which means I cannot guarantee my items have been in a pet free or smoke free environment. If you're highly sensitive to allergens, you should proceed with any vintage shopping with care. I try to curate and research all shop inventory to the best of my ability (I have a history degree and love the research aspect of this shop) because I believe a well informed shopper is a satisfied shopper. If you have any questions on an item, including pricing, please don't hesitate to message me.
