    Poetic Metal

Teresa Kiplinger is a studio jeweler, a poet, and a noted graphic designer. She explores themes of legacy and loss in her evocative, wearable stories and modern memento mori. She combines precious metals, humble alloys, enameled images, and original verse to create haunting and luminous elegies for unknowable souls. Inspired by personal narratives, memory, and ephemera, her expressive jewelry calls us to consider the fragility of our existence.

Her distinctive work has appeared in exhibitions, Belle Armoire Jewelry Magazine (Winter 2018, Winter 2020), and the Metal Museum. She is a member of the Society of North American Goldsmiths (SNAG), the Enamelist Society, and the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA). She earned a BFA in Graphic Design at Kent State University, and served on the Advisory Board for Kent's Visual Communication Design program. She works out of her studio near Cleveland, Ohio, USA.

    Poetic Metal

I felt a call to become a metalsmith in mid-life after two decades as a digital illustrator and web designer. I found myself longing to create something real; tangible artifacts to be unearthed long after I'm gone. When my teen stepson took his own life, I channeled my sorrow into my burgeoning metalwork. I forged a bracelet in his honor. I felt its weight and permanence in my hands as I formed it, and in the months that followed, I wore it every day. Each time I touched it, I felt connected with him. From within my grief, I found my voice. Soon, I was creating modern memento mori and mourning jewelry for others who were grieving.

Themes from my rural Ohio childhood often find their way into my work. I grew up on my grandparents' defunct farm, wading in waving pastures, playing in a barn full of rusty machines and sheet-covered victorian furniture. I explored my grandmother's bookcase that overflowed with family ephemera and disintegrating poetry tomes; even before I could read, the 19th-century engravings of gossamer angels and tempest-tossed boats drew me into a lost world of mortality and miracles. I studied letters from long-dead ancestors, their beautifully penned, private accounts of cares and minutiea called to my imagination. I tinkered in my grandfather's rickety workshop, its ceiling strewn with a hoarder’s cache of glass knobs, hubcaps, keys – when the wind blew, it all winked like a scrap heap chandelier. Enchanted in this dusty landscape of artifacts, I imagined all the stories behind the abandoned baubles and beds, the tintype lives, and the lost loves.

At university, I trained in the aesthetic of the Swiss school of graphic design. Though my body of metalwork does not always reflect the minimal Swiss style, its principles are ever present, from my obsessive sensitivity to typography to my attention to negative space.

But, I think the most significant influence on my metalwork is my affinity for poetry and its power to express emotion. All my life, I have analyzed, memorized, recited and written verse. I enjoy incorporating my original poetry in my jewelry work, using the visual rhythm of stanzas to create scintillating patterns that reveal, upon closer inspection, a deeper meaning.

    Frequently asked questions
How do I place an order for a personalized piece?

To order a bracelet with YOUR handwriting:
    1. Click "Ask a Question" and attach a photo of your handwriting. (See tips below)
    2. Select your size and click "Add to Cart"
    3. Checkout

To order a bracelet with MY calligraphy
    1. Select your size and click "Add to Cart"
    2. Checkout
    3. During checkout, enter your inscription in the "OPTIONAL MESSAGE TO SELLER"

If you have any questions, click the "Ask a Question" button (located on this page, near the item price). I'll get back to you right away!

How do I capture and send my handwriting?

Handwriting that is on plain, white, unlined paper yields the best results, but I can try to work with text that is written on lined or patterned paper if necessary.

To capture your writing, set your mobile phone camera to the highest possible resolution and take a photo of the handwriting near a window or outdoors in natural daylight.

To send, click "Contact" or "Ask a Question" on any of my pages and attach a photo of your handwriting to a message. If you prefer to send your handwriting via email, please send to Teresa@SilverPoet.com, and be sure to include your full name in the message so I can match your photo to your Etsy order.

Is your silver jewelry real silver?

Yes! All of my silver jewelry is made of .935 solid sterling silver. It is not plated or filled!

How do I figure out my bangle size?

I offer four sizes for my bangle bracelets:

    S: 2" Inner Diameter / 6.5" Length
    M: 2.25" Inner Diameter / 7" Length
    L: 2.5" Inner Diameter / 8" Length
    XL: 2.75" Inner Diameter / 9" Length

    TO MEASURE YOUR HAND:

If you cannot measure an existing bangle that you already own, measure your hand. Do so by touching your thumb and pinky together, then wrapping a cloth measuring tape around the widest point of our hand. The bracelet you order should be at least 1/4" larger than this measurement. I have found that plus size women, those with arthritis, or those who prefer a looser fit will likely prefer a size L or XL.

Will I see a proof before you make my piece?

    FOR YOUR HANDWRITING:
I do not provide proofs for pieces that use your own handwriting.

    ...

    FOR MY CALLIGRAPHY:
For pieces that use my calligraphy, I will send a proof for approval EXCEPT from 11/14 - 11/28. I'm sorry, but I am not able to provide proofs during this time.

I am happy to make one revision to your calligraphy proof at no extra charge. Revisions beyond the first round are $20 per round and can be paid via a custom order upgrade before completion of your order in metal. Not to worry! Most of my clients are pleased with the first design and do not request any changes. :)

    FOR FULL COMMISSIONS:
For completely custom commissions, I will discuss the design process with you when you inquire.

How should I care for a piece with a stone?

    • Do not bathe, swim, or shower while wearing a piece with a stone.
    • Do not expose any part of a piece with a stone to lotions, oils, dyes, solvents, conditioners, cleaners, chemicals or soaps.
    • Do not immerse a piece with a stone in water or liquids of any kind, including jewelry cleaners.
    • Do not expose a piece with a stone to jewelry cleaning cloths or abrasives of any kind.

*** Because many of the stones I use in my work are naturally porous, failure to follow the instructions above can result in permanent damage or alteration of the look of your stone. Stones that are damaged by failure to follow these instructions are nonrefundable. In general, wear your stones with verve, but treat them with care. :)

How should I care for silver jewelry?

Sterling silver is mostly maintenance free and can be worn all the time if desired. Repeated exposure to lotions, body oil, soaps, shampoo, water, chemicals, and even the air can darken the look of silver over time; this is due to a natural oxidation process that takes place in all sterling silver. Many people enjoy the aged look of this patina as it accumulates over time, but it can be easily removed by buffing lightly with a silver cleaning cloth; I recommend Sunshine brand cloths. To help preserve the bright finish of your silver longer, remove it before showering or swimming, and reduce its exposure to air by storing it in an anti-tarnish felt sleeve or polypropylene ziplock bag.

How should I care for bronze jewelry?

    • Do not bathe, swim, shower while wearing this necklace.
    • Do not clean with solvents or chemicals.
    • Do not expose any part of the necklace or stone to lotions, oils, dyes, solvents, cleaners, chemicals or soaps.
    • Clean with mild soapy water and fingertips.
    • Do not buff or polish with jewelry cleaning cloths.

Occasionally, my bronze pieces may need to be stripped and refinished, especially if you live in a hot and humid climate or wear the piece daily. I do offer bronze cleaning and refinishing services for $20 per item + shipping. If this is of interest to you, please send a convo and I will create a custom cleaning order for you.

How long will it take to receive my personalized order?

Unless otherwise noted on an item description, for made-to-order or custom orders, please allow 14-20 days for me to create your piece with love and care, + shipping time. For shipments within the continental US, I ship via USPS Priority Mail, which should arrive within 1-3 days of shipment.

*** Turn around times might vary during holidays and certain times of the year. Please be sure to read item descriptions for current turn around times.

In some instances, I can offer rush status for an order for an additional cost, and expedited shipping may also be available. Please let me know via Etsy Convo before placing your order to discuss rush pricing and to make sure I can meet your deadline.

Can you add an icon or symbol to a personalized piece?

Yes! For an additional fee, I can add symbols, icons and decorative elements like flowers, vines, birds, anchors, crosses, etc. to your piece. Please send a Convo via Etsy to discuss your idea and pricing!
