#formandfunction Handmade Stoneware Ceramics for the home and garden

Stoneware Ceramics with both form and function.

The video above shows me making one of my citrus squeezers on the wheel.

From running through giant kiln rooms in the pottery factories of my hometown Stoke-on-Trent, to my studio in the beautiful Forest of Dean, to my new home along the beautiful Devon coastline; my life has been shaped by ceramics that I in turn shape to create unique pieces for your home and garden.

The pieces I make fall into two categories; homewear items for the kitchen and beyond, and sculptural pieces for the garden and/or site-specific installations.

I make all the pieces by hand in my studio in the stunning Devon countryside.

I continue to source all my clay from the same family business.

I use both my potters wheel to form mugs, pots and smaller pieces, and for larger items I hand-build.

Stoneware is my preferred firing method and the fluid movement of the stoneware glaze is another major source of inspiration.

The process means that each piece is unique, standing in direct contrast to the conformity that creeps into our homes via mainstream production methods.

My passion for the processes involved in stoneware ceramics is fueled by my kiln - this is the place where hard work, experience, and pure love of clay, mixes with fire and just a little bit of magic!

I've spent the last 20 years working on my own glaze recipes that suit my individual style of ceramics perfectly.

I've developed a range of key colour ranges so that you can choose which glaze best suits your own tastes and surroundings.

Most pieces come in a range of different coloured glazes - as seen in the listings. For bulk orders please don't hesitate to get in touch to discuss the full range of glazes available.

All my pieces are glazed with colours from natures palette. The alchemy process of ceramics provokes the senses and utilises the four elements of fire, air, earth and water.

I take inspiration from natural forms and landscapes. The forests, hills, and rivers surrounding me fuel my creativity.

Through my work, I try to bring the outside in; to re-construct the wild within the home. To re-connect with nature by taking raw materials from the earth and transforming them through fire into pieces with both function and form.

The stoneware glazes and shapes I create, for example my 'Spiky Bowls', explore the essence and fluidity of water: the ebb and flow of life.

My background is in sculpture, and I use clay and wood to transform natural forms, such as mushrooms, into sculptural pieces. The micro landscape is magnified.

My tuned large ceramic bells are interactive and have proven themselves a steady favourite at exhibitions and events. I enjoy encouraging people to hit the bells (something which we are usually urged not to do), with wooden sticks – it is amazing the force people can apply. No breakages to date!

Challenging perceptions is integral to my work: ceramics can be delicate, yet strong.

My products are all food safe and heat / frost proof.

I'd recommend washing by hand to maintain the unique finishes.

I welcome commissions and particularly enjoy working with people to develop one-off bespoke collections for the home and garden. After a consultation process to discover where your individual taste, vision, and space come together; I will create a range of unique pieces to run through your home and garden with a wonderful, natural sense of continuity.

I also work with small businesses to create tableware/ crockery ranges etc.

Please get in touch to discuss further.
