Happy Friday everyone! I'm taking tea on the hallway bench in the autumn sunshine, looking through a national Japanese magazine with a very interesting article about....me and The Afternoon Tea Set! So surreal! Transit magazine has arrived in the post!

Tagged in this photo

Tea in the autumn sunshine on the hallway bench, with flowers. Three of my favourite things in one of my favourite places.
I'm planning new additions to my 'Tea For One' range, dare I say it - for Christmas! Lots to choose from in the existing range. Just choose your teacup and blend of tea, I'll pop in a tea infuser and box and gift wrap it beautifully. From £12 (+p&p).

About

Everyday little pieces of art and craftmanship, from real lives of the past.

~We All Love Tea And Cake!~
I've always had a passion for social history and how people lived in the recent and more distant past. Tea and cake is something we can all relate to and is something everyone enjoys. Yes, Afternoon Tea is often thought of as 'posh', but the basic comfort of a cup of tea and some little treat, regardless of class or outlay, provides a moment of comfort and a chance to relax in a busy day, this doesn't change. What perhaps has changed, is the chance to appreciate what effort went into making and designing the china and and other related table ware, such as cutlery, even for that 'everyday' cup of tea in the fifties, right through to a high end afternoon tea in the Edwardian 1900s.

~A Change In Direction From The Former Day Job~
When my baby daughter became ill at 5 months old I decided to take voluntary redundancy from my government job in town centre regeneration and economic development. I've always wanted my own business in something I could feel so passionate about I could be come completely immersed in (and obsessed with!), so a change in circumstances, that at the time seemed quite daunting, became an opportunity.

I started The Afternoon Tea Set originally providing private afternoon tea parties, providing all the home baked cakes and sandwiches, sourcing the tea from a local tea merchant and (my favourite part!) sourcing and using all the vintage china and silverware. A second baby later, the business had grown, I'd started creating mail order afternoon tea hampers with tea, cake and vintage china, and my afternoon tea china and collectables habit had become addictive! So I decided to see if anyone else was interested in sharing my passion for vintage afternoon tea items and opened my ETSY shop!

~A Bit Of A History Geek~
I love researching the pieces on my shop, I genuinely love sharing what I've found out about them and trying to place this in the context of who must have used them when they were originally created and what the world may have been like then. In many cases, some of them resonate because they were produced, for example, just before a historical milestone, such as the outbreak of World War Two, when a cup of tea two years later would be rationed compared to the original cup of tea someone may have drunk from a cup when it was first purchased. A simple cup and saucer can represent many things, a little affordable piece of art, fine craftsmanship, a moment in someone's life or a window on a world that has now gone and changed so dramatically without warning. These are things I feel we can all relate to, regardless of who we are or where we are from. In fact, it's often the simpler pieces, that you could picture on someone's kitchen dresser, perhaps your grandmother's when you were a child, that do this the most effectively.

~Doing My Bit, Keeping It Thrifty~
I love vintage for itself, but also know it's a great and green way to furnish your home and help live life everyday with beautiful things that don't use virgin resources. I always send out my parcels beautifully gift wrapped, but to date have never purchased brand new bubble wrap - I've developed a network of Local Bubble wrap 'donators' through friends and fellow businesses. Oddly, I'm really very proud of this! I source my ribbon from the haberdashery stall at my local town's market and purchase unbleached wrapping papers locally too. I reuse padded envelopes and boxes wherever possible. I ship everything from my local rural village post office, supporting my local fellow businesses and vital community services. It would feel wrong and slightly ridiculous to buy all my stationery and wrapping materials brand new for a vintage item, when I know I can wrap it beautifully and with integrity through reusing materials.

~Trying My Very Best And Being A Friendly Real Person Behind My Online Shop~
Asides from the history, I'm passionate about all aspects of my business. I strive to give the best customer service I can. If you have any questions at any point, just ask and I will do my very best to help. I always try to ship quickly and efficiently and always refund postage where overcharges through combined shipping arise. I also love sourcing locally, I often find out more of a piece's history this way and I love discovering craftmanship local to me. For example, my local city is Sheffield, England, the metalworking industry leader in England, so I take such pride in finding silverware from my local city! I also purchase tea for my Tea Set Gift Sets from a local wonderful tea merchant in Doncaster, South Yorkshire.

The Afternoon Tea Set is a little business, run by just me, but I place high standards on us both!

~Stay In Touch, The Afternoon Tea Set Is Sociable!~
For more tea and cake chit chat with vintage teacups, I often share coupon codes too!

I've always loved afternoon tea, the baking, the tea, the table settings! I'm also addicted to collecting and rummaging for everyday items used in real lives of the past, making them that little bit more special. I now get to indulge both passions!

All orders OVER £20, or equivalent value in the buyer's currency, WILL ONLY BE SENT TRACKED/SIGNED FOR, whether they consist of a single item, or a multiple order where the combined total value of the items ordered exceeds £20. I am not able to ask the Royal Mail to investigate shipment of parcels until 25 business days AFTER the 7th business day delivery aim has passed, in accordance with their terms. Therefore, it is not possible for me to class an order as undelivered until after this time frame set by Royal Mail has passed. However, please rest assured that non-deliveries are extremely rare, so please be patient, especially at busy holiday times. I will always do my best to help if you suspect your parcel could be late.

Please note that any parcel sent outside of the EU will have a customs label listing the item and price. This is a legal requirement.

**UK ORDERS: orders will be sent using Royal Mail standard second class. If you would like first class, recorded, tracked or next day/guaranteed delivery, please contact me BEFORE ordering. All orders of OVER £20 WILL ONLY BE SENT TRACKED/SIGNED FOR, whether they consist of a single item, or a multiple order where the combined total value of the items ordered exceeds £20. I am unable to ask the Royal Mail to investigate shipment of parcels until 15 business days AFTER the 3rd business day delivery aim has passed, in accordance with their terms. Therefore, it is not possible for me to class an order as undelivered until after this time frame set by Royal Mail has passed. However, please rest assured that non-deliveries are extremely rare, so please be patient, especially at busy holiday times. I will always do my best to help if you suspect your parcel could be late.

PLEASE NOTE FOR MULTIPLE/COMBINED ORDERS WEIGHING MORE THAN 2kg INTERNATIONAL & DOMESTIC: I will inform you ASAP if your order totals more than 2kg (normally 3 vintage china listings or more) and combined shipping may not be possible. For large multiple orders I reserve the right to ship orders in more than one parcel, for safe packaging and cost effective purposes. Rest assured that if this is done, it is due to it being the most cost effective and safe way to get your items to you - no one wants to receive broken goods. I will inform you if your order is to be shipped in more than one parcel. If you would like a shipping quote for a multiple order of more than one item please just ask BEFORE ordering.
Refunds and Exchanges
If any vintage china or item purchased from fails to meet your complete approval please contact me WITHIN 2 CALENDAR DAYS of receiving it and I will do my best to help and find an outcome you are happy with. You are entitled to return an item within 14 days or receipt. It should be returned in the exact same condition as you received it and you should contact me via Etsy or email to inform me that you intend to return it, before shipping. Return postage costs are at the buyer's expense and original postage costs paid at point of purchase will not be refunded (unless you are a buyer residing in the EU).

If any item arrives damaged please contact me within 24 hours. I WILL REQUIRE you to email a photo of the damage and the original packaging. I will then look at either providing an exact replacement (though this isn't always possible), a proposed alternative or a refund. I will deal with all issues and refunds promptly.

If the buyer has entered an incorrect delivery address, The Afternoon Tea Set is not liable for the costs of return shipping and will not provide a refund. It is the responsibility of the buyer to ensure they have entered the correct delivery address at the point of ordering.

As items are vintage, there may be some wear and tear commensurate to age - this is not a suitable reason for requesting a refund. I always do my best to state any minor issues or areas of wear.
