Spring in the south means we're surrounded by blossoms everywhere we look! Here some fresh white azaleas make the perfect backdrop for a closeup look at the tassels on a couple dog ropes.

We didn't have weddings in mind when we started making beach bags, but we love that it's given us the chance to work with brides making gifts for their special day. Soon ordering multiples will be easier than ever - new stuff in the works!

About

handcrafted by the sea, using traditional methods, for an ocean-loving life

Welcome to the Atlantic Ocean, a shop centered around the sea & the life that goes with it.

Our story began with a duffle bag...
Specifically an old WWII-era army duffle bag that belonged to my grandfather. There's something about the construction of this bag from years ago that's far better than any modern bag I've ever had. It's ancient, but it never wears out, even though it goes by my side for all my dive and surf adventures. Somehow it seems to look better the more abuse it gets. When I needed some surfboard bags for myself, I knew I wanted them to have the same high quality, utilitarian style as the army bag. I worked with my husband Joe, who has a knack for always knowing how to improve the quality a thing, to create something with the same classic good looks & durability.

Board bags were just the beginning. Joe & I are always looking around at our own lives, thinking about the kinds of things we'd like to have, seeing what can be done to make them by hand, make them better, make them special.

Everything here is made entirely by hand, full of warmth, texture & a little bit of saltiness. We use traditional methods of construction, to create personal, unique items that stand above the mass produced kind. There's something about working with heavy materials like canvas and leather that is really satisfying. It's the straight, crisp seams... the leather that ages so well and shows where it's been... the idea that what I'm creating will be around for a long time - it all makes me feel really happy! My hope is that the things we're making today will go out into the world and travel all over it, staying as durable and dependable as my old army bag has and becoming old friends to their owners.

  • Tasha

    Owner, Creator, Designer

I'm an artist & surfer living by the sea. My grandmother taught me to sew and to appreciate simple, well made things. The items I make are the items I'd want for my own life & are designed to be around for a long time. Surf, sew & skate, every day.

  • Joe

    Nautical Guide, Assistant

I'm a commercial diver with 12+ years experience so I know what works in the marine industry. Tasha makes things look good but they have to function well to get past me. I tie the nautical knots, research materials and test new designs.

Frequently asked questions

Care instructions

The canvas can be gently spot cleaned with a little soap & water. The canvas and nautical rope cleans up beautifully, so there's no need to worry about the light colors getting dirty.
Please don't put any of these bags in the washing machine! The leather and burlap parts should not be saturated, so while washing it's best to keep them away from the water. If they get splashed a little bit that's ok.

Custom and personalized orders

We love these. Send us a message, tell us your ideas. We can't wait to hear from you! Many of the bags can be personalized with a monogram on a small leather tag.

Gift wrapping and packaging

All orders come nicely wrapped in brown paper, tied with a bow. If it's a gift and you'd like to include a little message just mention that in the notes section at checkout.

Surfboard bags : sizing

Don't know what size board bag to order? Here's how the sizing works...

The size of the bag describes the size of the board that will fit in it, not the length of the bag itself. So a 9'0" bag will hold a 9'0" board. Easy. The actual bag will measure more like 9'3", to make sure the board will fit well. If your board isn't exactly one of the offered sizes, why not go custom? Or just go up a size. These bags aren't meant to fit super tight. The extra room gives you a spot for your wetsuit or towel and also looks kinda cool when it drapes over the board.

Surfboard bags : leather care

How does the leather hold up to water? Pretty well. It's water resistant, so it can handle getting splashed and if your wet board comes in contact with it, that's fine. Don't throw the bag into the ocean though. It'll still look alright, but the leather won't be as soft anymore

A word on handmade...

We believe that even though practically everything can be manufactured, we all still deserve to have a few special things that are made just for us. Each bag in this shop is carefully handcrafted using traditional techniques. Some think this takes too much time & isn't cost effective anymore. We disagree & say it's worth it to take the time & do things right.

Over the years some of our original designs have been copied and produced by other Etsy sellers, who sell them at a lower price. However these copycat bags aren't made the way we make ours. They may look similar but they are not the same. If quality goods are important to you & you believe in supporting artists, we think you'll be happy you went with a genuine Chapman at Sea bag.
