About

Unbuttoning Her Corsetry Obsession

The Bad Button started in a museum. That is to say, the idea of the company that would become The Bad Button was born in the world of vintage textiles and museum costume collections. In the way that it is difficult to separate the painter from the painting, its difficult to distinguish where the aesthetics Alisha Martin brings to her work end, and the actual product begins.

Fascinated with textiles and museum artifacts from a young age thanks to a rather bohemian upbringing spent in the museums of Europe, Alisha found herself gravitating to jobs in museums. Due to many serendipitous jobs in museums with great costume collections, she was able to pursue her passion as well as her profession.

Before ever attempting her first corset, Alisha studied extant museum garments for years to gain a deeper knowledge and appreciation of historic construction techniques. Interpreted through the lens of modern tools, her corsets echo the corsetry of the past while allowing for a range of modern bespoke finishing. With such labor-intensive techniques as beading and hand-stitching, custom pieces can be confections of clothing or starkly elegant.

Coupled with this emphasis on aesthetics is Alisha's initial training in human anatomy, focusing specifically on the skeletal system. Academic training and lab work contributed to her understanding of the body. By focusing on not only the desired shape, but the body's structure, she focuses on the maximum comfort as well as reduction. By working with the clients physique, rather than against it, the skeleton isnt compressed and the conventional problems of historic corsetry can be alleviated resulting in a feeling best described as a comfortably tight embrace.

Finally, after five years of research and practice, The Bad Button came to be as a professional corsetry studio in 2010. Catering to clients around the world, The Bad Button provides the custom garment experience.

Refunds and Exchanges
All standard and fully custom items are made to order, as The Bad Button does not keep corsets in stock excluding the occasional sample. Items cannot be returned, exchanged, altered, or refunded. Once the order is placed and the deposit has been paid, no changes can be made to the order, excepting cases of contractual obligation. Orders may be cancelled before the delivery of the final product with the understanding that all money paid and all materials sent to The Bad Button are to be consider forfeit and will not be credited or returned to the client. The Bad Button understands the responsibility to mitigate losses due to client related contractual issues, and may cancel an order should the client fail to meet their responsibilities as outlined in the contract.

Please measure carefully. Each corset is made to order, so the correct measurements and style is tantamount. Alisha will help you select an appropriate size, style and design, but the final choice remains with the client. Corsets cannot be exchanged, returned or altered. For fully custom orders complete with mock-up service, fitting issues will be addressed during the process. Alisha will make suggestions regarding the fit, but the choice remains with the client. The final corset will be made with the agreed changes. Once this process is completed, there can be no changes or alterations, even if the client’s body changes by the time the corset is received.

Specific designs created by The Bad Button for commission cannot be used to create replicas for sale or production by other seamstresses/corsetieres. Disclaimer:
The Bad Button is not responsible for:
• Any loss or damage (to your body or your possessions) caused by wearing The Bad Button’s creations.
• Loss or damage to the corset due to improper handling, wearing, storage or cleaning. This is to include dry cleaning. While The Bad Button uses quality materials, metal, fabric and thread change their behavior erratically over time due to temporal and environmental conditions. Should you be concerned about the proper care of your corset, please refer to the “Care and Cleaning” information provided with your corset. All fabrics and embellishments will affect how you must care for your corset, so treat it accordingly and you will have a beautiful garment for years to come.
• Loss or damages caused by delivery. The Bad Button will hold to the contract, and do the best possible to stick to schedule, but occasional delays occur that are beyond control. If you have a special event, please plan ahead well in advance and be sure to provide the earliest absolute deadline (within reason). Provide all information as quickly as possible to prevent delays. Also, while shipping during the holiday season or overseas, be sure to plan extra time, as mail carriers experience higher volume. It is also recommended that you add insurance to your package, as occasionally damage does occur during shipping. This is not included in the standard shipping rates. Please contact The Bad Button to add this to your order.
• Customs or duty fees. These fees are the responsibility of the recipient.

Privacy Policy:

The Bad Button values your privacy. As the sole proprietor of The Bad Button, Alisha keeps the details of each sale (to include addresses, measurements, and other pertinent information) but will never share or distribute that information to third parties.

Terms and Conditions:

All purchases made through The Bad Button's Etsy shop are held to the same conditions of in-person contracts. By purchasing through the Etsy shop, the client is affirming all details of the corset, and agree to abide by the terms set forth in the purchase description. The Bad Button will provide all pertinent information on the sales description, and the buyer assumes all responsibility for reading the description. The order of your corset shall be considered a contract made in the state of Kentucky, USA and shall be governed in all respects by the law of the United States and the parties agree to submit to the non-exclusive jurisdiction of the courts here.

Corsets made to your measurements without a mock-up presuppose that correct measurements have been provided. The Bad Button cannot be responsible for an incorrect fit if the measurements are off. If you have questions regarding the measurement process or believe that your fit requires a mock-up, Alisha recommends a returnable mock-up for $80. Please have a friend or seamstress help you with the measuring process as self-measuring can be tricky.

Bridal work is different from corsetry, and fittings and mock-ups (within reason) are included in the purchase price.
