Bibliophile - Lover of Books
Once upon a time there was a girl called Katie who worked for The National Trust in England. On a work trip to a Trust property she purchased a vintage book titled "The Sweet Girl Graduate". She bought it because the cover looked pretty and there was a dedication on the inside to a student who was graduating, and she liked the idea that she was holding a book that had belonged to someone else, and that must have meant a lot to that person.
She started to buy more vintage books, anything with a nice cover or a little dedication or just a book that was very old but would still be loved by someone else. She grew to love the scent of old pages and ink, the little pencil marks where an owner had found a line or paragraph that inspired them, and the odd litttle photographs, adverts and shopping lists that had been tucked between the pages as a bookmark and never recovered.
But she quickly ran out of storage space, so she started to list them on Etsy, where other bibliophiles and vintage lovers could find them and buy them, and they could go to a new home where they would be loved and treasured once more.
In a vintage book you have history at your fingertips. The book you are holding has survived for decades, it may have been owned by an evacuee in the 2nd world war, a Victorian-era clerk, or a woman in the 1920's who liked to read on the omnibus trip home from her shop job. It may have sat on a bookshelf after being read once, or taken down and read and re-read again and again as someone's most favourite story. There may be a Christmas or birthday dedication written in the front cover, showing that this book, now a little battered, perhaps a bit tatty, was once a gift to a loved one.
Vintage books don't just contain a printed story, they have a silent tale all of their own, one that will hopefully continue for many years to come...
