Announcement   Welcome to The Bijou Babe, my Etsy boutique, where you will find handmade artisan gemstone jewelry created with the finest materials. I use the highest quality precious and semi-precious gemstones, as well as freshwater pearls, that I source from reputable suppliers that I've been working with for years. The metals used in my designs are precious metals (sterling silver, solid 14kt gold or solid 18kt gold), as well as 14kt gold fill and 24kt vermeil. You will also find vintage and antique treasures incorporated in many of my pieces. I adore hunting for these treasures, and utilizing these enchanting pieces of history in newer, contemporary designs.

Each piece I create in my home studio is given the utmost attention to detail and craftsmanship, and is designed with a passion for unique, and wearable jewelry! My goal is to provide women with pieces that they can wear daily; pieces that can be worn while dressed up, or dressed casually. In essence, "casually elegant" pieces that can seamlessly transition from casual to formal, and vice versa.

The majority of my items are one-of-a-kind pieces or limited editions, so please don't hesitate to ask me to reserve an item or create a layaway plan that will work for you. Custom orders are also welcome! "Like" me on Facebook to see sneak peeks and receive special offers.

Thank you for visiting, I hope you find that special piece that you will always treasure!

*I have many clients ask me to clarify the difference between gold filled and vermeil, so I am posting some information gathered from my suppliers here! Many people have misconceptions about gold filled or vermeil, because they confuse it with "gold plate". I can assure you, they are vastly different! Vermeil must meet the FTC standard of 100 millionths of an inch (2 ½ microns) of fine gold layered over sterling silver. In order for a piece to be labeled legally as "vermeil", the item must not be less than 10 karat gold and have a substantial thickness, with a minimum thickness of 2 ½ microns. In contrast, "gold plating" is a miniscule layer of solid gold applied to a brass base. The plating does not compose any measurable proportion of the product’s total weight, and is estimated to be 0.05% or less of the metal product. Gold plating will wear off rather quickly and expose the brass base product. Vermeil jewelry that meets FTC standards, as those featured in my shop, will NOT wear off quickly, because it is NOT a thin layer of gold. While vermeil jewelry may tarnish (the base is sterling silver, a precious metal that tarnishes), it is easily cleaned and restored to its original beauty if cared for properly.

*What is "gold filled"? Gold-filled is constructed in two or three layers. The core metal is jewelers’ brass. Single clad gold-filled has all the gold content in a single layer on one side. Double clad gold-filled splits the gold content into surface layers on both sides of the material. The gold alloy is then bonded to one or both surfaces of the brass core with heat and pressure. The bonded raw material is then sold as sheet or wire to jewelry manufacturers for use in designs.

Gold-filled is legally required to contain 5% or 1/20 gold by weight. This 5% is then described by the karatage of the gold alloy. Most gold-filled is 12kt or 14kt gold-filled. All of the gold-filled used in my designs is 14kt.

Thank you for reading, please feel free to contact me regarding any questions, or if you would like me to create (or re-create!) a design exclusively for you.

Take a few seconds to look at all three necklaces: using antique pendants, two of which I've had for years, Susan has lovingly created three custom chains, hand-wiring precious gemstones and pearls throughout, in either yellow or rose gold fill. Now go back, and take a few minutes...don't you feel the urge for Romance? If you send Susan your own vintage pendant(s), she will make nostalgia beautifully wearable for modern times!

I've been dreaming about getting my own 'Storm' necklace for over a year; luckily for me, Susan agreed to order those lovely black rutilated quartz briolettes from one of her most trusted suppliers, and has created this exquisite version for me!

'Confetti' necklace, how aptly named with its shimmery and sparkly confetti-like multi-colour tourmaline gems. A fun and colourful necklace, yet utterly luxurious!

My charming and romantic custom-made 'Raindrops on Roses' earrings to go with Susan's marvellous eponymous bracelet, which I purchased a few months ago. Susan will make all of your (bijou) dreams come true!

My third pair in Susan's 'Girl with a Pearl Earring' series: so fresh in its spring-like splendour, with gorgeous, lustrous and exquisite Baroque pearls! I'm wearing them as I write...

Vintage charm galore in this lovely necklace expertly executed in rose gold instead of silver. I have been buying Susan's jewellery for several years, and all of her pieces are exquisitely crafted: if you fall in love with her jewellery on screen, imagine how you'll feel when you get them for real!

About

High end materials and a love for antique pieces

My love for handcrafted artisan jewelry began while I was in college. I worked for a small business owner whose fabulous boutique carried the most amazing artisan jewelry. Working there really opened my eyes to the possibility of not only being a small business owner, but creating my own unique pieces of jewelry. It wasn't until many years later that I decided, with the support of my husband, to take the plunge and venture into the world of jewelry design and Etsy.

I source my gemstones and materials from reputable suppliers that I've been working with for a number of years. When it comes to purchasing materials, I am very particular in what I choose to use in my designs. I want to offer my clients luxury gemstones, as well as high-end findings (chains, ear wires, clasps). The materials I purchase are those you would find being sold in high-end boutiques. Besides exquisite gemstones, my other true love and passion is for antique and vintage pieces, particularly lockets. I spend a great deal of time searching for special pieces to re-invent, so that they can be worn and enjoyed by today's woman. There is something so special about mixing antique pieces that have a history and reinterpreting them for modern times.

Creating pieces that are wearable for every day is something I strive for; "casually elegant" pieces that can easily transition to formal or special occasions because they are classic in design. Although you will find some trendy pieces in the shop every now and then, (sometimes, those are just fun to do! ) I really prefer to stick to the classics. Knowing that a piece of my jewelry will always remain in style and can be worn effortlessly for years makes me proud.

Please enjoy browsing my shop. I enjoy doing custom orders, and would be thrilled to work with you on a project if you have something in mind that you do not see in my shop.

Thank you for visiting! ~Susan
