i let my heart guide my hands, connecting with the generations of crafters of beauty from my past, weaving in new connections

I started my shop unexpectedly. I became a full-time stay-at-homer after my first child was born. Of course, once my husband and I committed to that, the economy went South and so did my husband's line of work in upscale home renovations and cabinetry. So, we tightened our belts and I began purging the house and selling it all online. My first etsy shop included vintage items I had collected through the years, some BW fine art photographs I shot with a Holga camera, and hand-embroidered bodysuits (an obsession I had begun while making special ones for my son).

The Bird & Ele is an ever-evolving brand of high quality baby toys, gear and clothing, including organic and non-organic cotton fabrics. I have so many ideas that I can't wait to try out, and I am ever inspired by the fabrics I see, as well as, the beautifully illustrated children's books we read and traces of nature we scavenge along our daily paths.

I come from a long line of artisans and crafters, canners and quilters, wood whittlers and mule breeders. My memories of those sweet smelling preserves, the home-baked breads, the clink of wooden blocks and the warmth of a solid pathwork quilt are so ingrained that I'm beginning to carry on (learn) the traditions so my children, and husband, will be able to taste the natural foods I was raised on and feel the love from hand sewn gifts.

My patterns and placements, functions and concepts are very much intentional. A lot of thought goes into movement within the fabrics, how one block panel reads next to the others, etc., to create energy and flow among even the calmest of prints. I combine my art knowledge with child development, lessons learned from being engaged, still and quiet around children, to create baby toys and gear with a purpose. And I'm always eager to keep on learning.

Frequently asked questions
Care instructions

- Remove the fabric strip and wash with everyday laundry.
- Wood Rings should always be handwashed, never in a dishwasher or soaked in the sink. Failure to follow these guidelines will result in damage to the ring, including splits, breaks and splinters.

Wash with everyday laundry.

Spot cleaning/sanitizing by hand is recommended, but if a run through the wash is deemed necessary, please use a cold water, gentle cycle with gentle detergent free of brighteners, whiteners, and chemicals harmful to baby and the environment. Post wash cycle, toss in a low setting dryer or air dry. Knead the block into shape.

Follow these simple care instructions for both organic and non-organic items.

Sizing details

Bib sizes denote the distance between the actual snaps, not the length of the bib, itself.

Custom and personalized orders

Custom orders are welcome, however, please keep in mind that creating a custom block will take longer as the layout of fabrics, ribbons, etc., takes a lot of thought.

Initials? Names?
I'm happy to personalize, but on a limited basis. I do everything by hand, and at this time, the personalization is in the form of a hand-embroidered applique.

Custom orders and personalized orders cannot be expedited as they usually take up to 2 weeks dependent upon my current work order.

Expedited orders

To have your order expedited (made by hand and shipped quickly) there is a RUSH FEE of $20.

Link to the RUSH FEE listing:

I may not be able to accommodate all rush orders, based on availability of materials, etc.

Wholesale availability

Wholesale requests are welcome! I no longer do consignment. Please contact me for further info regarding my wholesale terms, or if you are a member of the wholesale side of Etsy, please click this link:

Gift wrapping and packaging

My packaging is simple and minimal, at this time. I like to minimize my shop waste, so I use discarded fabric strips to bundle up most orders, and everything goes into a clear waterproof bag to protect your item(s) from the elements.

I am currently in the process of creating packaging that will enhance my products and leave a minimal impact on the landfill.

Processing Time

I make EVERYTHING by hand, by myself. I've requested a personal fairy to answer emails and tidy the shop floor, as well as a couple of seamstresses to help with the sewing, but until those positions are full, it's just me:
answering emails
searching for and ordering fabrics
photographing new items
writing listings
cutting tags and labels....
Please know that I work around the clock, until the wee hours when even the mice have stopped playing (and yes, I am seriously lining up a team for the future).

HOWEVER, see above for Expedited orders, and always, if you need your item by a particular date, please, please let me know to make sure I can accommodate your request.
