About

A High Beam Act: balancing handbags with art, design, color and technology.

2011, atop a mountain in the Adironacks where I grew up in upstate New York, I married my best friend. Tucked under each bridesmaid’s arm was a clutch I designed with love and a secret. They were all the same on the outside, but the insides exposed a fabric interior personalized for each, related to an inside joke or something in their lives.

It was this design project in my mid twenties that led me on a path to making more bags. I have always been a “tactile person” toting a blankie as a wee one and enamored with soft fabrics as an adult. (You know that woman that walks through a department store and needs to touch all of the garments? I am her.) I love the feel of leather, the touch of fabric through my hands as it slips through the machine. Birdbags are a tactile experience for the owner, bags that speak to each person, and are unique in their aesthetics and design. They are fashion meets function, with personal organization at the core of the design.

My time is split between being a middle school art teacher, a wife and a mother; you could say sewing lends a structured balance and creative outlet to my life. My grandmother taught me to sew as a young girl; pillows, simple bags, the oh-so-popular-extended-leg-nineties-jeans. When I picked sewing back up as an adult, it felt like the seed had always been there, just waiting to be cultivated.

Why is the brand called Birdbags? As a teen, my friends gave me the nickname "bird," mostly for my contagious energy and whimsy. A simple fit verses bags by bird. Each Birdbags style is named after a trait or type of bird to fit the product. All Birdbags are designed and handmade by me, in my one woman studio in California.

Welcome to the online world of Birdbags. Please take the time to read my shop policies. Birdbags handbags, totes, clutches and accessories are designed using quality fabrics and leathers. Each Birdbags product, even if similar in style, will be different from the next because it is made by my hands, not in a factory, in my one woman studio. Buying handmade goods should be a special experience, one that is a far cry from buying in a department store, you are buying from a maker you can communicate with, so feel free to reach out and message me. Every Birdbags product comes packaged with love, and ready to give or receive as a gift.

Additional policies and FAQs
“BIRDBATH” INSTRUCTIONS:
Birdbags handbags, totes, clutches and accessories should be spot-washed using mild soap and water, and hung up or set out to dry. If wrinkling of the fabric occurs, you may iron the crease away on a low temperature setting. Message me with any further questions.

• DO NOT put Birdbags in the washing machine or in the dryer.
• DO NOT iron leather
• DO NOT iron Vegan Leather / vinyl (it will melt!)

All Birdbags are handmade, by me (You’ve probably read that once or twice.) None are sewn in factories or on an assembly line. That said, each handbag is unique, original and may have slight differences from another bag in the same style.

BE CAREFUL WITH YOUR BAG. You invested in a handmade item. Take good care of your purchase. Should you have any issues contact me right away and I will do my best to remedy the problem.

Wholesale inquiries are welcome! Message me and I’ll be happy to consider your interest.
