About

It began with just one little hat....

I am a self taught crochet artist, designer, seamstress, and gardener. I'm deeply inspired by nature, sunshine, and bright colors. As a young child my grandmother taught me to knit but the skill never seemed to resonate with me, yet, I fell in love with the creation process. I first began the art of crochet at the young, innocent age of 10, and I was instantly hooked! As a young girl I would spend hours working on little flowers and simple afghans. There was something so beautiful about taking a strand of yarn or thread and turning it in to something that had depth and use. My love for fabric crafts came later as a cherished way for me to give to my children.

- The Buttercup Basket Story -
During the winter of 2009 I was a stay at home mom to a sweet little girl and a chubby baby boy. While visiting a local store, I grabbed a crochet pattern book full of hats, some very brightly dyed cotton yarn, and a hook. I began a heavily textured women’s hat and, to my surprise, I ran right out of that brightly colored yarn. So, I took out a few rows of stitching, looked at the pattern and tweaked it just enough for my little ball of yarn to be enough to complete the hat. When the hat was completed it had become a darling, ruffled, toddler hat for my cute girl. Everywhere I took that sweet girl and her ruffled hat we received a compliment!

Though there seemed to be a growing trend for needlework and fiber arts I became frustrated with the availability of relevant styles. This frustration quickly turned to determination to write some of my own trendy patterns! I bought yarn, yarn, and more yarn! I made hat after hat until I had the style and sizing just right. The process would begin again for each new idea and style. Our cozy two bedroom condo became an explosion of yarn, handwritten patterns, scissors, baby toys, and more yarn!

I was introduced to Etsy by a friend, and after a little browsing, I really became motivated! After several months of preparation the shop became a reality in late 2010. Although The Buttercup Basket specializes in crochet hats for children and adults, it has grown to include: crochet patterns and children’s apparel.

Now, with over 20+ years of experience in crochet and design, The Buttercup Basket has become part of the family, along with three more children! It is a crazy, busy, fun, exciting, and stressful life; especially around Christmas! All Buttercup products are created by me from my own original designs and patterns. I am a perfectionist, for better or for worse, and thus every piece I create is completed with meticulous care and attention to fine detail. The support of family, friends, and customers keep this little business thriving. Enjoy the shop!
