About

Our Family Farm & Home grown Fibers

My dream was to live on a farm & raise Horses.. Every girls dream right? I laugh at myself now, if I had only known what a Drastic left turn my life would take. In 1995, I moved into the house I now own. As a single Mother, I took a third job training “Llamas”, A seemingly huge task then, But I fell in love with them. Grand champion performance, 4hers From NY state to the Regionals in Virginia 1996. I met & Married the love of my life soon after had a son, & Bought this little house & Barn in 2001; we officially became The Critter Ranch Llama Farm. I started showing our Llamas in 2004, we placed 8th at Nationals that year!! I started a shearing business for Llamas & Alpacas, and this new 14 week seasonal job was the hardest work I’ll ever love!! I traveled met people learned about fiber, I explored how to use My Fiber, all fibers, how to make a business out of it, have it help pay for the animals.
As they say “first came the wheel”, spinning wheel that is. Basically self taught.
People wanted Bright dyed colors, So that meant I must learn how to Dye it to. I met My Mentor, Great Guy who taught me loads of info on Dying Carding & general Fiber Biz stuff.. I purchased My Carder and was soon dyeing carding & spinning. We opened our etsy store in Nov 2008, Joined Phat Fiber Sample Box in 2009, We know have a Store & workshop on the farm where we Grow/ Make & sell everything from raw straight off the Critter to final product.. We shear, wash, card, pick, dye, felt, spin, Drop spindle, All as part my full time Job & I love it! 90% of our product is NY local & processed right on sight..
we do bring in Combed top because I enjoy dyeing it for those who love spinning it

Hand Prepared Llama fiber is a delight to the senses! Soft as cashmere and warmer than wool, Llama spins like a dream and when blended with other luxurious fibers is absolutely too much to resist! The Llama used in my batts, roving, & hand spun yarns come from my own beautiful, much loved & champion animals. My Passion for fiber came out of my passion for the Llamas

We strive to use our own Farm Fresh Fibers That Include Llama, Alpaca, We also ad in & use local farm fresh Wools such as BFL, Shetland, Romney, Boarder L & Common Sheep.. Most come from NY state small farms…but all is US produced.
I carry some commercial combed top because I like to Play around dying it…
Our Batts & Roving are Made on a Patrick Green Supper Carder
The Fiber is run through at least twice the last time the finished Batt/Roving is put together And ready for Removal From The Carder if it is a Batt it is Gently Lifted away from the Teeth and placed Flat on the Table. The ends are folded to the center then the Batt is folded in half and rolled then banded & placed in a plastic bag. The Batts measure approx 15”inches wide by 35” inches long when removed from the carder and thickness is dependant on the type of fiber. Roving is removed from the carder using a hand dizz, and rolled into a ball or braided after it is dyed. I make 2-4 ounces of Roving at a time so each Lot is Different and would not be exactly the same.
