About

The Story of The Curious Caboodle

The Curious Caboodle came to life in early 2018. I was on a quest to find a name for my new creative venture that summed up me, what I do and what I make. The name was born after many brainstorming sessions and thumbing through a well-loved thesaurus. Words such as compendium, collection, almanac, trove, story, foraged, menagerie, emporium were paired with others such as treasures, trinkets, curios, mementos, relics, miscellany, found, ephemera. None of these words were working. Then, appearing from the pages of the thesaurus was ‘caboodle’. I instantly connected with this word, both it’s meaning and sound, and the glaringly obvious match was curious.

Definition of Curious - 1. marked by desire to investigate and learn. 2. exciting attention as strange, novel, or unexpected

Definition of Caboodle - 1. a complete group or collection of something

I am an artist and maker of crafty and creative things. I am invariably hidden away being industrious in my bijou studio at home in Scarborough. I live with my partner and a rather cantankerous cat named Earl Grey. Our house is a five minute walk from the beautiful tree lined local cemetery and has an inspiring view of Scarborough Castle and the sea.

I have a passion for collecting and hoarding. I love nothing more than sorting items into containers by categories and labelling. Everything is fair game and nothing is off limits. Postage stamps. Keys. Foreign coins. Books. Pine cones. Fabric. Sea glass. Shells. Bottles. Bottle tops. Cigarette cards. Suitcases. Old papers. Broken jewellery. I scavenge for my treasures in dusty antique shops and thrifty flea markets, on walks at the beach or in the woods. It can be the shape, colour or texture of a find that attracts me to it. The more age, wear, rust and patina, the better. More often than not it is the intrigue of the memories that are attached to an object, the unknown past life it has lived.

These forgotten treasures are reincarnated in my art and craft work and are fused with different elements. Stories between these elements are formed as I work and are weaved into my creations. I enjoy using a wide range of techniques and make an eclectic mix of items including paintings, collage, jewellery, textiles, ornaments, sculpture and assemblage. My work is tactile and whimsical, sometimes peculiar with a little bit of oddity and a lot of curiousness.
