The Felted Gnome Knows by susio

I use local wool from farmer friends in Vermont and try to stay in New England for special wools. These days I am dyeing my own wool that I purchased or processing raw wool . which means I skirt, clean, wash and drum card. Hand dyeing is always a surprise of varying colors and shades so I drum card it to better blend colors. When you buy from The Felted Gnome you not only support a Vermont Artist but you also support Vermont Farms. All that you see in my shop is designed and made by my own two hands in my studio. I have no helpers, factory or off site company shipping . It is truly hand made by the artist.
Needle Felting is a unique art. It is not an old technique, it started in the 1980s when some artists found that by using a machine felting needle they could shape wool by stabbing it . It takes many stabs over time to sculpt wool into a solid figurine but the results as you can see are terrific. There is something magical about wool felt creatures and paintings. It emanates warmth, strength and evokes a time when play was innocent. I hope you enjoy my little beings and my functional art as much as I love making them.
What is Wet Felting?
Wool fibers are stimulated by friction and lubricated by hot water and soap to force the scales of the wool to interlock and compress thereby creating a wool felt cloth.
I layer local Vermont unspun wool roving, add soap and water and then rub, roll, slam, and beat in to submission to shape the hat, slippers or mittens you see here. Then it is air dried, a design is needle felted onto the item and it is wet felted a second time to lock in the fibers.
All my wearable art and accessories are made by wet felting. Much of the wool either has been processed by me after being sourced from local farmers or has been processed by a local (next town over) fiber mill.

I am a former social worker who is artsy, crafty and a bit eccentric. I love fibers, magic and a little bit of fantasy. I like gnomes and they it seems have taken a liking to me. I am an old lady gnome living with a pixie, troll and miniature dragon

Welcome to The Gnome Knows! The gnome knows that a handmade gift made with time and love is a wonderful way to show someone you care about them!
I am committed to our farmers in Vermont and New England and choose to use local wool as much as possible. I choose to process and dye my own wool and also use a local fiber mill to help in this venture. All of the items I create have my involvement from start to finish, raw wool to finished art.
Please feel free to convo me about any of my items or a custom order.

Returns and exchanges
Due to the delicate nature of felt I would be happy to repair an item if it becomes damaged in transit or within the first 30 days. You must pay the return shipping. If some reason you are unhappy with your purchase please contact me and I would be happy to refund your purchase as long as you return the piece through certified mail undamaged within 7 days of receipt. The refund will be issued as soon as I receive the piece. I do not refund shipping costs.
I do not refund for felting kits after 2 weeks from shipping date.
Custom orders must be paid up front and will not be refunded and can't be returned. Much time and detail go into custom orders and it can be hard to resell an item that has been made to someone's specifics.
Payment
I accept Paypal and credit cards through Etsy.
Shipping
I ship through the US Mail and will provide a tracking number. Please note that shipping costs include handling as well. Box, packing, drive to Post office, labels etc are included in the shipping cost. The shipping is priority mail, sometimes flat rate (due to the size). If you feel the cost is prohibitive please contact me and we can negotiate for a different postal method (parcel post etc). International orders will be sent by First Class parcel post.
The postal service is it's own entity and I do not have control over weather, road conditions or postal people so therefore I can't guarantee that an item will be there at a particular date unless you are willing to pay for priority express. Please contact me if you are willing to upgrade the shipping so I can adjust the price.
Additional policies and FAQs
International customers are responsible for their own countries custom fees. I will not mark the item as a gift as it is an unethical practice. If an item is returned because custom fees have not been paid only 75 percent of the purchase will be refunded. Shipping costs will not be refunded.
