About

Rescuing wool and making it work

The "Flying Fleece" is a personal re-invention of Portuguese wool and the product of my journey, from rural Portugal to big city North America.

An avid knitter from a young age, I moved to Vancouver in Canada in 2008. I went there to study Philosophy and ended up falling in love with the vibrant 'knitting culture' of the city. I began spinning and being much more curious about my home-country sheep. Why couldn't I buy 100% wool yarns at home? What did all these farmers do with their wool? And, especially, why did everyone keep saying it was no good to use?

In between the paradoxes that make up Portugal, I discovered that wool got burned most of the time. No one would buy it at a decent price or spin it and use it. Wool was perceived as a poor and unrefined material. And that's when said - "I'll take it! I'll buy the wool. "

This shopis my way to show that Portuguese wool, with its unique characteristics, has artistic and economic value. It is beautiful, useful and it is ours.

I was born and raised in the countryside of Portugal. At 15 I moved abroad to study and I fell in love with philosophy and wool. It's been an amazing journey ever since.

My parents are the fellow wool-enthusiasts that help with contacting producers, washing wool and all other crucial details of the Flying Fleece. They make sure all orders are shipped from Portugal all year-round.

Frequently asked questions

Custom and personalized orders

I am happy to take orders for custom fiber and yarn! Message me for more information and priced.

Care instructions

All my yarns are 100% natural untreated wool. Be sure to hand wash them with cold water and lay flat to dry.

Allergy information

All my products are made on a pet-free and smoke-free home. However I do work in my garden with the fiber. Even though all yarn is washed afterwards, there might be some traces of pollens. Some traces of vegetable matter may also be present.

If you have a very serious allergy and would like to check for potential contact with a certain plant, feel free to contact me and I will be happy to check if there are any around!

Imperfections in Hadmade Yarn and Fibers

Please note that all yarn (except for destash sale) is handspun or hand dyed and, as such, there are variations within a skein. There might be low tension zones that can potential break the yarn when handled. Just open the fiber ends and rub them together to join again.

Hand dyed yarns have variations in dye uptake resulting from the leftover oils in the wool (we don't use harsh chemicals).
