Redesigning The Wedding Garter Tradition. Too Pretty To Toss.

ABOUT THE GARTER GIRL

Julianne Smith is The Garter Girl, a stylish wedding garter design company that began in 2004. The Garter Girl is dedicated to redesigning wedding traditions, helping brides make memories and creating family heirlooms through the art and design of wedding garters.

Julianne believes that a wedding garter is a small, but meaningful, way for a bride to celebrate her own personal style. The Garter Girl’s sophisticated wedding garters are designed to be modern heirlooms intended to be cherished for generations to come.

Each and every stylish wedding garter in the The Garter Girl’s collection is meticulously hand created by Julianne and designed with a recognizable modern femininity that encompasses her signature style.

The daughter of a seamstress and a surgeon, Julianne grew up in small town Pennsylvania surrounded by lots of family and tons of laughter. It was a love of politics that brought her to the nation’s capital where she fell in love with D.C. and city life.

Before creating The Garter Girl, Julianne was a communications strategist and media specialist. She worked on Capitol Hill for a member of Congress and served in the White House’s administration.

Combining her passion for DC, media and weddings in 2010, Julianne started the Washington DC area’s top wedding website, United With Love. Featuring locally helpful wedding planning advice, Julianne built United With Love to be a trusted resource and a well-known brand with thousands of readers every day. She was able to sell United With Love in 2016.

Julianne is obsessed with style and is known for her passion and sophisticated attention to detail. She is also known for consistently being overdressed, a loyal friend and always ready to host. She is the mother of three small children and lives in the city of Washington, D.C. with her husband and family.

THE GARTER GIRL STORY

Just wedding garters?….That’s it?….You don’t do anything else?…..Why? This is how the conversation usually goes when meeting new friends or talking to most about The Garter Girl. Here is the true story of how it all started.

In 2003, one of Julianne’s best friends, Brooke, was getting married. It was your typical large bridal party and each bridesmaid was assigned a special task. Always known as the “crafty one” and the daughter of a seamstress, Julianne was put in charge of finding her friend the perfect wedding garter. It was something that the bride really wanted and was excited to have on her wedding day. Brooke loved being a bride and having garter was a special heirloom she was looking forward to.

Brooke got married before Etsy and social media had taken off as valuable wedding planning resources. Julianne searched tirelessly, but was unable to find a stylish wedding garter worthy of Brooke’s unique, fun and girlie personality. Knowing that she was given only one bridesmaid duty for which she could not fail, Julianne hand made Brooke’s wedding garter herself.

The original The Garter Girl wedding garter was very “Brooke.” It was white satin with a something blue accent stripe that was furry. Yes, furry. And, she loved it! Brooke’s wedding garter perfectly matched her style and her personality. Best of all, her garter still fits her personality all these years later!

Julianne is very proud of that first wedding garter. She worked really hard to figure out the garter’s construction and still uses many of the same sewing techniques in today’s designs.

To say that The Garter Girl’s wedding garter designs have evolved over the years since Brooke’s wedding is an understatement. But, the core mission is unwavering. The Garter Girl believes in celebrating a bride’s personal sense of style, allowing her to honor her own traditions and helping her to create new memories for generations to come.

To answer the original questions: Yes, it is all wedding garters, all the time around The Garter Girl studio. Julianne believes in doing one thing and doing it impeccably. Just as she was given only one bridesmaid duty, The Garter Girl is focused on designing and hand making stylish and modern, yet feminine, wedding garters.
