From Pies to Candles

I started making candles in summer of 2020, after I graduated college. My goals were to share my commitment to environmental sustainability, and to bring clean, healthy, magical scents into peoples homes during the pandemic. It started out as a side gig while I looked for work, but The Glow Co. quickly became my full-time job. Now, I spend most of my time obsessing over design details, finding ways to improve my products and customers' experience, and blending scents (my favorite).

I got my start as a business owner selling handmade, vegan/gluten-free pies for a restaurant in my hometown of Baltimore, Maryland. Baking was always my passion, but a chronic illness made it hard to continue for more than a few years. I still baked pies for friends and family, but I missed perfecting recipes and connecting with customers while working for myself. Now, I get to love my work with less pain, and still appreciate yummy smells all day.

The Glow Co. is a queer owned business based in Spokane, WA. When I'm not making candles, I'm either developing recipes, making herb tinctures and salves, listening to paranormal podcasts, or watching horror movies with a good whiskey.

Frequently asked questions
My candle isn’t melting the wax all the way to the edge. What’s wrong?

If you’ve let it burn for at least three hours and there’s still 1/4” or so of unmelted wax at the edges, don’t worry. As you burn repeatedly over time, the container will warm up and melt it all down. It will catch up in the end, and you’ll get to appreciate every minute of that 70-hour burn time.

The flame looks small. Did I trim it too short?

As long as the melt pool reaches within 1/4” of the edge in 3-4 hours on the first lighting, it’s all good! Your candle was crafted for maximum burn time. When a flame is too large, it melts too much wax and burns off the scent too quickly. If you’re worried the wick might drown, you can always rescue it by spooning out a little bit of melted wax.

My candle is smoking. What’s wrong?

Trim that wick. As long the wick is trimmed to about 1/4” each time you light it, it should not create any smoke or soot. When the flame is too large, it will not only smoke, but it will melt too much wax and burn off the scent too quickly.

What is the scent made of?

The Glow Co is committed to bringing safe products to market and into your home. The fragrances are a combination of essential oils, resins, and synthetic aroma compounds which are non-toxic and just as safe as essential oils. All fragrances are phthalate-free, and contain no Prop 65 ingredients.

Why not just use essential oils? Aren't they more natural?

Fragrance oils are formulated to blend with the wax better than essential oils alone, allowing the candle to burn better and create consistent and adequate scent throw. Essential oils are also way more expensive, and would require significantly higher selling prices.

I didn't do a memory burn the first time I lit my candle! How can I fix it?

Use a heat gun or hot hair dryer to melt the wax until the melt pool reaches the edges and the top of the candle is even. If this causes the wick to drown (become too small to stay lit), use a cotton ball or the edge of a paper towel to soak up and remove some wax.
