Since 1998, I have created thousands of neopagan and neoshamanic ritual tools, from pouches to jewelry to dance costumes and more, made from hides, bones, feathers, beads and other such things. Many of the technical designs, such as the braided belts for tails or the multiple sets of straps for full skin dance costumes, are my own unique designs that stem from my early experiments and have been further developed over time. I offer years of experience and finely-honed creativity in my work, and a strong spiritual component to my creations.
The majority of the animal parts and other components are secondhand or salvaged, either from old fur coats and the like, or discarded from the fur coat industry, or old jewelry and other found objects, though be aware there are some newer/not recycled remains incorporated in some projects as well. You are most welcome to ask me about the specific origins (secondhand, hunting/trapping, fur farming, etc/) of anything I make an expect and honest answer; I will not misrepresent something just to try to appear more eco-friendly or ethical. If you would like to source something with less environmental/etc. impact, I can do so to the best of my ability, though be aware there are limitations--animals that die in the wild, for example, very quickly become food for others, and so "natural death" remains are rare.
Everything made with animal parts, regardless of origin, is ritually purified, and offerings are made to the appropriate spirits; additionally, a portion of the proceeds goes to various environmental and animal-based nonprofits. This has been an integral part of my spiritual path for over a decade. (In fact, I've written an entire book on the spirituality associated with my work with animal parts, Skin Spirits--and yes, there's a listing for it here on my shop) Also, I AM NOT NATIVE AMERICAN NOR HAVE I EVER CLAIMED TO BE. I create art as a European mutt neopagan from the Midwest and currently ensconced in Cascadia. More information on legalities surrounding Native art may be found at http://www.artnatam.com/regist.html
I can only ship animal parts and art made from animal parts in the U.S. I also follow current state restrictions on possession and sales to the best of my knowledge; buyers are responsible for knowing their state's restrictions; you can research US-relevant laws at http://www.thegreenwolf.com/partslaws.html
I am a licensed deer hide and antler dealer; in the state of Oregon, this license is necessary A) to sell deer hides and antlers (not as art), and B) to purchase deer hides and antlers, to include for the purpose of making them into art. You can find out more about legalities at http://www.thegreenwolf.com/animal-parts-laws

5 out of 5 starsThis is not my first time purchasing from Lupa, and as always I love that they personally sign each book with a tiny nice message with the date on it! I find that to be So special. So far not one of Lupa's books have made me feel unwelcome or uncomfortable, and I have felt that Lupa's writing techniques are amazingly open and they are very clear about how you can form your own practice. As a mixed person of colour I appreciate that they went to the lengths to adjust their books accordingly over time, as well as the way they encourage everyone to learn from multiple view points and register and take the time to consider all of your options and to find what best works for you. The past books I've read have been an inspiration and a joy and I cannot wait to read these.

Skin Spirits, Sacred Remains.
I've been fascinated with the wild world since I was very young; some of my earliest memories include me as a toddler roaming my back yard (and those of the neighbors!), exploring under trees and even bringing home a tire-flattened toad (my first roadkill collection!)
That fascination continues today, thirty years later. I'm an avid hiker and outdoorswoman, as well as a citizen naturalist. My experiences range from the cerebral (a Master's degree in counseling psychology emphasizing ecopsychology) to the spiritual (over a decade's practice in neopaganism and neoshamanism). However, it is the creative processes inspired by the world around me that are most prominent here in my shop.
Since 1998, I've been working with hides, bones, beads, and other such things in my artwork. I've created ritual tools, sacred costumery, jewelry and other devotional objects. While there are some perennial favorites, both for me and my customers, I enjoy a good challenge and am constantly exploring new projects and ideas as an artist.
It's not all about me, though. I began this work almost fifteen years ago as a way to honor the animals who once wore these skins and bones. I wanted them to have a better "afterlife" than being a trophy on someone's wall or a coat in a closet. The artistic and spiritual are very deeply entwined in my work, and every creation, no matter how simple, is a devotional to these sacred remains.
I'm also strongly influenced by sustainability and other eco-friendly pursuits. The majority of what I work with is secondhand or reclaimed in some manner, whether it's old fur and leather coats, beads salvaged from broken jewelry, or even cards from incomplete tarot decks. Nothing goes to waste--even the tiniest scraps from my art are collected and made into pillow stuffing! And as has been my practice the entire time I've been doing this, I donate a portion of the money I make to nonprofit groups that benefit wildlife and their habitats.
I've shared more about what I do and how others can take part through my writings. I have several books in print, including "Skin Spirits", a how-to book on the spiritual as well as practical end of working with animal parts and "Skull Scrying", a booklet on using animal skulls in divination. My latest book is "Nature Spirituality From the Ground Up: Connect With Totems In Your Ecosystem" from Llewellyn Publications. I am also a prolific blogger, both on my own blog, A Sense of Natural Wonder, and elsewhere, and have been published in numerous pagan and related magazines and other media.
Today I am incredibly fortunate; I am 100% self-employed, and my Etsy shop is a crucial part of that. Not very many people can say that they do what they love and believe in for a living, and I hope to make the very best of this opportunity. I have so many ideas I want to bring to fruition, and with luck I'll have just enough time to see them through!
