About

Carry a little joy wherever you go.

You’re a creative person. You make beautiful things. Handmade wonders that take hours upon hours to complete. You spend a fair amount of time picking out the perfect supplies for your projects and you want them to be of good quality. Your handmade treasures are often gifted to others and when you give those handmade gifts to your loved ones you take special care to wrap them in pretty packaging.

Well…I believe your handmade items should always bring you joy and be wrapped in pretty packaging from start to finish. And that’s what The Handmaker’s Bag is all about. I make quality beautiful hand dyed yarns and pretty bags for you to fill with wondrous creative projects. Gorgeous hand dyed yarns that inspire and bring joy to your creative life and bags to keep your works in progress in until they are completed and ready to go to their new homes. And then the bag is ready to be filled with a new creative venture.

Hi, I'm Katherine. Welcome to my shop. As a handmaker myself it's always been a struggle finding the best way to store my works in progress. I’ve tried a lot of project bags always looking for that perfect one that has all the features I need. Never really finding that perfect bag I decided to create my own. After showing them to a few knitting friends who loved them and kept asking for more I thought maybe knitters and other creative makers across the world would love my bags just as much. And so in 2016 I opened up The Handmaker's Bag.

Not long after starting The Handmaker's Bag I got the dyeing bug and wanted to create my own line of hand dyed yarns. So in 2017 I started Twigs + Twine Yarn Co. with my daughter. Working side be side we had a lot of fun creating new yarn colors. But raising a family takes a lot of time and in 2018 my daughter decided to take a break from the yarn dyeing business. Twigs + Twine Yarn Co. was then incorporated into The Handmaker's Bag. You will still find yarns dyed by Sarah in my shop and she sometimes does some guest dyeing.

I became so passionate about creating hand dyed yarns and project bags that at the end of 2017 I took a leap of faith and quit my full time accounting job to pursue my creative business full time. It's been wonderful and I've never regretted it for a moment. My dream is to grow this little business and make it a sustainable part of my life supporting my family.

Through trial and error I think I’ve come up with the perfect bags for every handmaker. Whatever type of handwork you like to do, whether it be knitting, crochet, cross-stitch, needlework, embroidery or countless others, I think you will find a bag to fit your needs in my shop. All bags are made from my own patterns and designs and sewn in my Washington home studio. Great care is taken that each bag is constructed to perfection but still holds the uniqueness of being handmade. They are made from quality fabrics and interfaced with a heavy interfacing and padding (select bags) to not only make the bags sturdy so they stand on their own but to also help protect your expensive needles and tools from poking through the bag.

My yarns are dyed on quality bases that knit up nicely and can be used for a variety of crafts and projects. I use high quality acid dyes and make every effort to rinse all traces of excess dyes to prevent bleeding.

If you'd like a little behind the scenes look at The Handmaker's Bag I'd love for you to come follow me on Instagram and Facebook. Or sign up for my newsletter and get advanced notice of shop updates and sales.

Happy creating and always...

Carry a little joy wherever you go.

Frequently asked questions
Care instructions

Bags - Most of my bags are made to go in the washer but some may not fare well from machine washing. I suggest spot cleaning or hand washing. This will preserve the integrity and crispness of the fabric better. If you do want to wash your Handmaker's Bag in the washer I suggest using a gentle cycle. I am not responsible for any damage or deterioration from machine washing your bag. Lay flat to dry and press with a warm iron.

Yarn - Hand wash only in warm water and a mild wool wash. Lay flat to dry.
