About

The Hanky Heiress - a corner shop online...

Mercers' Shop once a corner "Wool Shop" is online here as the Hanky Heiress. The shop name belied the range of its contents. Inside was haberdashery heaven.
The name should have given it away. Translate haberdashery to French and what do you have? "Mercerie."
Open from the 1920's to the early 1960's, the shop provided a neighbourhood with trimmings, sewing needles, lace curtains, towels, silks, fancy goods and of course woollens. Upstairs, ladies knitted dolls' clothes and much needed vests.....

In hard times during the Second World War, my grandad cycled around rural Lancashire with his basket piled with lace and ribbons to sell to farmers' wives in outlying farms. He would return sometimes with vegetables or chicken for the pot.
By the time I knew the joys of the shop, it was run by sisters Lally and Emma.
Sadly both the shop and its neighbourhood were demolished in the sixties to make way for high rise developments. Little of the stock survived bar what was left to me in a suitcase.....
The rest is as they say, history........not to mention the other treasures I have accumulated along the way, many acquired during long stays in Calvados, France.

In addition to vintage, I produce a range of cards and prints often with vintage themes.
My hand made gilded mirrors are sometimes available and have their own shop section.
Further artwork is to be found in my other shop www.etsy.com/people/theterriersclub

Frequently asked questions

What delivery service do you use?

I use first class postage in the UK.
In order to keep international shipping charges as low as possible, I use standard airmail. This does not provide a tracking number but is economical and reliable.

I would like to buy several items, what postage will I pay?

I am always happy to combine postage. Just email me with your selection and I will make up a reserved listing for you.
