I love the folk arts and find great joy in keeping their histoy and beauty alive.

I have learned to paint in many of the Rosemaling styles but my love is the Rogaland style because of its shading and detail. When I make a piece, I first draw an original design and base paint the wooden item, then I transfer the design onto the wooden item. I then paint the design with oil paints. When the piece is dry I add a coat or two of varnish to protect the painting. To get my designs onto the metal I then take a digital image of the piece and take that image to a local store that can do a sublimation dye process to infuse it onto the metal. In order to get pictures of a quality that was good enough to do this I had to get a better camera and from that grew the love for the beauty all around me so I have added some of those images to the wind spinners.

The discs are created from 18 gauge cold rolled steel, acid washed and powder coated for added rust resistance. The color is applied through an Infusion process that creates a finish that will not fade or flake off!

Welcome to The Hobby Chest. I began learning ethnic arts many years ago, it started with Rosemaling, the folk art of Norway, and it has grown to include many folk art styles. Rosemaling is traditional done on wood with oils and this is what I do but that limits it's uses as it can warp or be easily scratched. I have had the image from my original pieces infused onto metal so it is more durable and safe to be outside. If you have any questions please contact me. I also do photography and in some cases have had photos infused onto the metal. Marbled items are hand done by floating color on thick water and dyeing the material by laying it on top. Cards are photographs on card stock and come with matching envelopes. I hope you enjoy my shop.
