Handmade wooden treasures that last a life time and beyond.

Wood is Mother Natures artistry at its best, She's the artist, I'm just a tool She uses to highlight Her miracles. The beauty in each piece lies just beneath the surface and my job is to bring that beauty out so it speaks with a loud and clear voice. Each timber has a story to tell, a history and a being. She'll tell you all these things, but you must be quiet and listen. As I rub my hands over a timber I try my best to listen to what she's trying to tell me. Some, will cuddle you like a warm puppy while others will do their best to break all your fingers. Regardless of the message, if you be quiet and listen, you'll hear what she has to say.

Raw timber to finished piece can take a year or more so you've got to be thinking ahead.
Most of my pepper mill turning wood comes wet in 3"x3"x12" timbers and must be dried to a moisture content of 8%-10% so it won't crack and warp. I normally turn these down while still wet to uniform cylinders and coat the ends in wax to prevent cracking. Then they go into drying racks where I check their weight each week until the moisture level is stable and they are ready for turning into finished pieces. I usually double check the moisture content with a moisture meter to make sure the moisture content is accurate. Depending on the wood species it can take anywhere from 2 months to a year before they are ready to create a finished pepper mill.

Bowls blanks come in various sizes but are wet as well and I usually turn them to a basic shape then soak them several days in denatured alcohol. They alcohol displaces the water and evaporates faster which speeds the drying process from 4-5 months to about 2 months. The bowl will warp as it dries so it goes back on the lathe to cut it back to a perfect round. If the warp adds character to the bowl, I'll sometimes leave it as is and finish the piece warped. This can have a spectacular visual effect. I've probably got about 300 individual pieces in my wood inventory at any one time. When I have the opportunity, I'll harvest wood myself that is destined to be taken out but I never cut healthy living trees. Timber self harvested is limited to ones that have been diseased or removed by power line maintenance crews.

I strive for a "simple beauty" in my wood work as much as possible and try to let the wood do all the talking. Mother Nature produces spectacular wood work on her own, my objective is to simply highlight Her hard work. Each timber has its own personality and will "talk" to you if you listen. When I put a raw timber on the lathe and start the first cut, I try to listen to what the wood is telling me. It usually has a lot to say about its final portrait.

Given the proper care, pepper mills and bowls will not only last a lifetime, but several lifetimes. They are pieces that can be handed down through generations as family heirlooms. You can spend more money on fine wood work, but you won't find any that's better made. It's a lot of time consuming work and you must enjoy doing it but I can't think of anything I'd rather do! Well, maybe golf!!

Welcome to The Kings Woodshop!! Thanks for taking a minute to look around. My name is Del King and I own and operate The Kings Woodshop. My operating philosophy is very simple. Treat you exactly the way I want to be treated. All items on my site are handmade by me in my woodshop located in Greer, SC.

I love working with wood and all pieces are handmade by me. Because of this no two items will be exactly the same. For example a salt and pepper mill created from the same type of wood will be very similar and look like a matched set but the grain pattern will vary slightly because of the location of the turning blank within the harvested tree.

I'm proud of my work and I take great care in creating a treasure that you can not only use, but pass on through many generations. Simply stated, I make each piece as if it were for my own family. When I finish a piece, if I would not be proud to display it in my own home, I won't send it to you. In my view, the finished piece must be appealing to the eye of course, but the real test for me is "how it feels in your hand". I try to build this "feels good in the hand" in every piece I make.

I use only the finest quality materials I can find both locally and from dealers. All of my creations are 100% hardwood. All pepper mill grinding mechanisims are stainless steel. All salt mill grinding mechanisims are ceramic (to prevent rust).

Because each item is hand made most take some time to create. My goal is not to create volume, it's simply to create a handmade treasure that you will be proud to give as a gift, display in your home and last a lifetime.

My pieces are not for everyone nor are they intended to be. But if you are the type of person who appreciates solid value, honesty and a beautiful handmade product
then I think I have something to offer you.

I love working with people to create a custom piece that's just right for you and would be glad to talk with you about a specific piece you are looking for. Just drop me an e mail at delking57 [!at], leave me your number and I'll give you a call or call me at 864-303-0473.

Thanks for looking!

I gladly ship to international customers, just send me a convo so I can quote the shipping charges for you, and I need a minimum amount of information for the customs declaration form.
