Store all your DIY jewellery supplies in a dry, dust-free environment, cleaning with a soft cloth. Avoid contact with strong chemicals, cleaning products, water, creams, make-up and perfumes. A person's skin pH balance can also adversely affect special glass and metal finishes.

During manufacture, some glass beads progress from solid coloured glass to a process called 'coating', where a colour or particular finish is applied. The chemical ingredients in each coating may react individually to these outside influences.

No one can predict how well a coating will wear over time, but you can learn from your own experience and reduce the wear to which your beaded jewellery is exposed.

Contrary to the stigma, mercury Czech glass bead finishes DO NOT contain mercury and are entirely non-toxic, as are all Czech bead finishes. Phew...you can relax!

In the early 1800s, Germany was well-known for its mercury glass Christmas garlands and glass ornaments. Initially made with toxic mercury to give them a silver metallic lustre as it was an affordable alternative for the lower classes to fine-silver fixtures with the bonus of never tarnishing. However, by the 1900s, mercury was replaced with a silver nitrate solution, but the name stuck. Today's non-toxic mercury Czech glass bead finishes are an ode to this bygone era.

Czech glass beads are handmade by artisans from traditional Bohemian glassmaking techniques dating back centuries. Due to their handmade nature, glass bead colours can differ between production batches.

In around 90% of cases, the colour of a bead will be nearly an exact match between the original production run and the most recent production. In about 10% of cases, a colour variation can be quite noticeable, not within the control of Thelma May's Attic, and not considered a fault, but rather a tribute to the age-old art of handmade glass beads.

I deal with minor variations in production batch colours by assigning new product photos and any significant variations with a new product listing for complete transparency.
